Wow. I've been reading this thread and still really don't know what to do.
Di - I can understand about the pregnancy stress, it's tough to know what to do. At my first appt, the NP said they (the docs in that office) highly encourage/recommend that pregnant women get both the regular flue shot and the H1N1 vax but not until after the 1st trimester, and both only in the shot form, not the mist. So that puts me out awhile. I'm glad you had Meghan seen right away and she seems to already be on the mend.
Sara - Glad your boys were seen right away, too. It's great Bryce bounced right back and Keegan is getting better.
Dom took Kevin to the doctor Tuesday morning after he had a fever (101-102) since Saturday, along with coughing, runny nose and diarrhea. But the doc since there was no vomiting, lethargy, and complaints of aches and such he doesn't think Kevin has the flu. No infections that he could pinpoint either. Fever went away for a day then returned Wednesday night, but it's back down to really lowgrade today. Just a virus, I guess.

Jo, Bryce never did vomit.
Keegan did a few times but all happened right after I gave him his Tamiflu, so more like he was gagging the medicine down which caused him to get sick.
His classroom has two bathrooms in it with sinks so I know it is no issue for him to get up and wash his hands.
Also, his school knows he tested positive for the flu so if they said it was fine to send him back then it comes down to their issue. If they would've wanted me to keep him home I would've done so without issue.
Meghan's pedi and school said the same thing... fever free for 24 hours without medication and they can go back to school. Luckily, we are at the weekend now so I'll get to keep her home until at least Monday without worrying about it.
Are you l giving her meds today? I know you said she was running low grade, so I was curious.
That's one good thing about getting sick close to the weekend, you have those extra days, lol
She got her first dose of Tamilflu yesterday afternoon, then another this morning.
I gave her motrin this morning but haven't given it again because she's not complaining about her throat as much and her fever hasn't gone up. I would rather see how her fever goes throughout the day without medication. I'll give it to her before bed.
And yes, I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized I had a 2 day padding in there before I have to decide whether or not to send her back to school! Plus, I'll have Mike home to help me this weekend.

Meghan never vomited either and her pedi said it wasn't a big symptom with this flu.
She did say that the Tamiflu is know to upset kids stomachs though.
I hope Kevin is better soon and it was just a short lived virus!
di- im so sorry about meghan - i hope she's feeling better soon - poor little thing!!
Thanks! She's doing a lot better this afternoon and it's really just her throat and the cough that is bothering her. She sounds like a squeaky duck though and she's *loving* it. I've never heard her talk so much (and she's a typical girl blabber-er LOL). I don't think it's going to help her throat though.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind about the vomiting. Kevin is doing better today, hasn't needed any Tylenol or Motrin...just a temp around 99, and he's been running around all morning.
Just a thought... if all your kids do have the h1n1 as the doctors say - i find it interesting that they are bouncing back quite quickly. Also, in the ivillage expecting boards i am hearing a lot of the same thing - lots of gals kids, hubbys, even the pregnant women themselves get the h1n1 - and it is rare that an adult is knocked off their feet for even a few days.
i start to really wonder - what is all the hype about?

ita. i know for regular seasonal flu, i've never been given meds. maybe they're more likely to give meds for swine? my cousin in england has swine right now. she was on FB all night last night saying it was crappy, but certainly not life-or-death. :dunno seems weird.
I think its jst like the regular flu as most people are trying to say but can definitely be very bad as can the reg flu. Since its a new strain its all up in the media. I guess its a slow news day LOL. Its kinda like when a plane crashes its huge news and a car crash can get by on a local channel. ( I realize this is probably a bad example since many more people die in the plane) Even though plane crashes are more rare people are more frightened by that that riding in a car.
also I feel bad for all the docs. All the docs Ive talked to are just like wash your hands stay home same things youd do with regular flu and come in if you get bad as with the regular flu, but its hard to counter act all the media hype even when they are the professianals.

I think because there have been more deaths in pregnant women and young people than with the regular flu.

I think like any virus or strain every person reacts differently.
In my education of of the H1N1 is that it big difference is the target age it is hitting hardest and it is not the elderly like the regular strain of influenza A or other strains. It also seems to be changing into upper respiratroy illness and other complications.
Also, unlike the Inf. A, it is like the bird flu and humans have a different resistance to it compared to the regular flu strains. They worry it will cross with the bird and create an even bigger issue.
I do not think it was all meant to scare or create hype. I think it started out as an unknow of how it would spread. They are still staying this will have record numbers this season with this flu. so the more that have it, the more that spread it, and leads to becoming sort of a pandemic. It does not always have to be fatal. It can wipe a school out or hospital and then there can be issues.
I think that is really why. Our nurse just went to a conference on it and filled me in on the low down of what the medical professionals are saying. They do treat it like the flu, but just as they have the flu shot available in normal seasons, they had to add this strain to help protect. No difference really. Same precautions, but there are many that need to be educated. I think what always happens is that they go to war with the info they have and not wait to have the best defense. Who knows what would happen if they wait for the total results. It could be fatal and that is why they are trying to get on top of it and spread the word. The biggest thing is to stay home and not infect others to reduce the infections of others.

I agree. And I think the chance of secondary infections is worse for some reason with this flu.
Meghan is down and out again. I didn't give her the motrin this morning and she has a fever (~101 so not awful but still enough to make her feel icky). I know for me, if I have a fever, I am done. Looks like Meghan is the same way. I'm guessing the energy yesterday was because the motrin knocked out her fever.
Still not able to take the Tamiflu. Since her fever is back, I'm leaning towards yes but everytime I go to open and take it, I just can't do it.

Poor baby I guess that answers your school question for Monday though, lol
I didn't watch it, but I don't think it would've changed my mind, especially after talking to the PICU doc I mentioned. The man is a GENIUS, and I trust his opinion over anyone's

After being pretty certain I was not going to get the h1n1 vaccine for the boys, I have swayed the other way. The ONLY reason I am is because it seems to be targeting kiddos more that regular flu and because of Travis's asthma, I can't afford to have it in the home. I don't love the decision, but I do think that is our decision.
What a hard one. These are the internal debates I never imagined about parenting before I had kiddos.
Melissa - I saw that you asked JoAnn about the vaccine - I asked her myself when I saw her IRL 2 months ago... being pregnant and all.. asked her what she would do.
She told me that she is quite against taking vaccines that are not properly tested, and that she would not be getting this h1n1 shot herself, nor giving it to her kids. She said if she herself was pregnant she definitely would not get the shot.
well, that was her pov a few months ago - interesting to read her response to see if it is still the same or if she has since changed her view...
