the lighting right now is crap, sorry. here's a before and after. what's left to be done: 1) finish painting - we're doing the color that's above the cabinets. 2) do the moulding around the door. 3) change light fixture. 4) white roman shades for door and window. 5) paint eating area (not pictured) - wainscoting will be the same color as cabs, and walls will be same color as kitchen walls. 6) floor will be wide planked and light wood within the next 6 mos.
the eating area needs some structural work but nothing too major. so that will be done along with the floors. it needs enough that the kids and i will have to go stay at my moms for a few days.
and i think that's it for now. what a freakin' process this has been. we had a lot of false starts with staining these cabs. i'm really happy we just painted at the end of the day. im' also really happy i went with home depot knobs and pulls versus restoration hardware - same thing, more than 50% less. thanks for looking. this project has sucked the life out of us. (and i guess will continue to do so for the next year!)
Wow. I really wish we could have done the kitchen here. It is such a big job!
I absolutely love it.
it's been a nightmare. any DIY is a nightmare. but it sucks when 75% of your cabinet space is within 2-yr-old reach. but it really needed to be done, and i'm ok with the fact that we're "behind" on the floor - this tile is really so practical with the kids - wood will look great but will be a pita for me to deal with, so i'm really not in a huge rush (though i hate that nothing is ever 100% done around here).
omg girl!! that looks absolutely stunning!!!! I can't get over the difference...you have a great eye. what is your counter again? I just love it!
Great job all around!!
thanks so much you guys - it's so nice to share this with you bc it's been just so much work. the counter is uba tuba granite. i love it. for a while i kept thinking "i wonder if i should have gone light" but now i'm totally digging the contrast, and how the knobs are tying it all in.

oh yeah...it totally makes the room!!! like i said..you have a great eye (I am horrible about being able to "see" how things will look). (oooh...take more pics too Please)!!

everyone's compliments are really boosting my ego, thank you guys. it's weird to live here bc changing my parents' stuff is always a little - daunting....so thanks for the reinforcement.
i'll definitely continue to post progress. i still have a LOT of painting to do (when you count the dining area). DH doesnt paint (he hates it so much) so it's all on me.
also forgot to add....we got the stainless steel dishwasher and will be getting a SS fridge and stove once what we have break. our current fridge and stove are 20+ yrs old and white, and they look fine in here for now. :)
thanks guys! i heard it "through the grapevine" (god love the sisters-network) that my mom "isnt crazy about it" - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. but i'm taking it in stride. lol. i think granite is just not her thing.
(don't worry about your mom - roll it off your shoulders... the old stuff was "her" style, its just a bit sad she can't grasp that you are different and that you did a wonderful job)

thanks so much. it is sad that she gets so judgmental about stuff like this - for her, if an upgrade doesnt look older, you didnt do it right. but that's her, and that's fine. a lot goes into changing the house you grew up in - i knew that going into this, and it's part of it. the dynamics are THICK. shrug. (but i love my new kitchen and my kids love it and are dancing all around in there, and that's what's important right now).
