Need Some Advice- BFing, BP, etc etc
Permalink

I had an appt today with my new GP. Awesome doctor. Pro-Breastfeeding. Is very supportive.

However. Because my BP remains high- it was 160/110 when I got to the office today and came down to 140/102 by the time I left- he recommended that I discontinue breastfeeding and go back on Lisinopril (not recommended for BFing).
As it stands I take Tenormin at 50mg alongside Aldomet at 1000mg (two 500mg tablets) every day and so far the combination hasn't done anything. He can't up the dosage of Tenormin because one of the side effects is a lowered heart rate. Mine was 50 and he was afraid that to go to 100mg would lower my heart rate enough to cause me to pass out, etc.
So, he told me that if this was his wife, he would suggest to her to stop BFing and begin taking the Lisinopril. We know it works for me and that the pressures were normal on it. He's considered about the long term damage from running pressures this high for this long- and combined with the chest pains and tightness I get with the higher BP's, he's worried that just adding one more drug (Procardia) to the mix just won't cut it either.
But- the decision is completely in my hands. I can choose to get the Lisinopril filled and discontinue BFing even though this amazing person(Alison) has helped me get my supply back up.
Or I can do what's best for my health and stop breastfeeding and take Lisinopril.

I just need some guidance here b/c if I ask DH he just says its my decision and I'm waffling.

WWYD in my shoes?

Wow, Jennie, I'm so sorry that you're still dealing with the BP stuff.

I don't really have any advice, since I'm not well-versed in blood pressure issues.

I'll pray that it just comes down miraculously on its own, and soon!

That is sure a tough decision to make.  I honestly do not know the ins and outs of blood pressure medications and breast feeding.  So take what I say with that in mind.  If you are not able to get your blood pressure down then I think it would be a good idea to stop breastfeeding and take what you need to lower your bp.  The risks that I believe are true, are not worth it.  You need to be healthy and well for your children.  They need you.  You also seem to have a pretty good dh and I am pretty sure he likes you too.  But if my understanding of it all is completely wrong then, never mind. police.gif

If that is the only med that your doc thinks will work, then I would say take it and pump for a couple of weeks while you see if the meds are working.  If they don't work and you need to switch to something else that is compatible with bf'ing, then you will still have your supply.

HOWEVER :) I am going to check with the experts about what Dr. Hale says about that drug.  He is the medications-in-breastfeeding guru.  So hang tight.  ;)

According to Dr. Hale, it is an L3, which is "moderately safe" for breastfeeding, but "Hale suggests enalapril, benazepril, or captopril  as alternatives."

I'll put in a call!

I couldn't remember the guy's name that you and Jools had mentioned and so I was stuck going, "Well, I guess that's that!" and in the back of my head I'm going, "What is his name? Yale? I was close..Hale rhymes with Yale!

Thanks Alison!

NP!  It sounds like the biggest concerns are with premature and low birth weight babies, and Adelaide is neither of those and already over 2 months old, so it's not like taking it while nursing a newborn.

LMK what your doc says!  Of course if you decide that it's not worth the risk to Adelaide, ITTTTTTU and I'll always be incredibly proud of you for how hard you've worked!  I want you healthy too!

Great advice from Alison. If you have to take the non-BF meds, then pumping for a little while can almost assure that you can start to BF when you are able to go off the meds.

The most important thing right now is taking care of YOU!
