Well seeing as its a private school and there are rules Im not sure. You dont have to attend there and so if thats one of the rules they want to enforce that everyone give them access then so be it.
This is why you shouldnt put things on the "INTERNETS"
This whole facebook/myspace thing is really unchartered waters. There are not a whole lot of rules/laws for school when it comes to internet. There is a lot of bullying, inappropriate pictures, etc. and it gets brought into the school.
We even have had issues with phone text on cell phones. Our school has a no cell rule, but law states that if you find a phone you cannot open it and search its contents to see who it belongs to. We are not allowed to open a student phone.
This should be a parents job, but as we all know, not all parents do their job.
There will be a lot of this talk and issues coming up for schools. I have no idea though how legally they can have rights to control this, but if it does state in their policy that they can expell a student for certain behavior, not sure where the line is drawn. I imagine there will be lawsuits down the road.
Ridiculous = they are asking for their username and password not just to be able to look at the student's page. In that case they are jeopardizing many other people who never agreed to have their information looked at by this school. I think it's totally ridiculous.

I do not see how they can even do that. If we cannot even look at a students cell phone. I will not fly.

Well then should they have access to a student's email too? I just think if you can cross one line it will keep sliding. I mean where does it stop?
Yeah it is a private school but I don't think they should have access to something a student does OFF campus. Plus just because you go to a private school doesn't mean that you should have to give up all your privacy and rights.I think that is something that the parents should deal with... not the school.

It will be interesting to see if this goes to court. Public vs Private institution have vastly different rules of what they can and cannot do.
Did you know that "freedom of speech" is not guarenteed at a private u that way it is at a public u?
And yet... did you know that a public u CAN hold a student accountable in it's own judicial system for a students actions OFF campus. Billy is 19, gets busted for DUI off campus. Billy also faces our campus judicial system for violation of the student code of conduct.
Facebook is unchartered. And a pain in the ass in a liability way (do I drag a student in for something I happen upon on facebook? We have when we saw a gun...but where do you stop?). ITU why some campuses have said F it and blocked it from the campus servers.
I love this sort of legal jungle. It was my favorite part of my grad program.
Jenn. Yes, I will someday upload a signature.
