Go for it.  I know that am still finding out exactly what is what with Elizabeth, but we do know she does have gross and fine motor delays.  We just don't know how much.  Elizabeth goes to a ballet class and absolutely loves it!  The girls in the class are 4 and older but no one really cares.  The teacher makes all the difference and as long as they are having fun, that's what matters.

I can promise you that Elizabeth is not anywhere near as coordinated as the other girls.  But I can tell you that it is encouraging her to try to do things like "pony prance", twirl with arm movements, point her toes, walk on her tip toes, pretend to be a butterfly, skip, jump and other skills she needs to work on.  We don't really practice for any length of time, we just do one of them for a minute and then go on to whatever we want to do.

I also think it's a great confidence builder for her.  She gets to do something that she can talk about with her friends and her friends have all been in dance too.

I will say last year we went to another dance studio and it was not a good fit for us, but then again I wasn't taking E there to become a prima ballerina.  I just want her to enjoy it.

I'd say go for it!  Crystal was pretty clumsy when she was little, too, but dance pretty much took care of the worst of it within a couple of months.  It was amazing the difference it made in her motor skills.  She loved it, which helped, too.

($585 is pretty good for most areas.  I pay $260 for the whole year at one hour per week, but this is a very poor area so they can't charge more than that.  It's the only way I can afford dance for my kids.  The dance studio here keeps costumes for recitals reasonable, too.  Only once have I had to pay more than $50 and that one will be reused this fall.  Most of the ballet costumes we've only had to pay around $30-40, jazz and tap have been even less.)

April most 3 and 4 year olds can't dance and they are totally unaware of the kids around them. I wouldn't worry at all.

I would ask if they have a free trial class and try it out first.

I had Sarah signed up for a session at a dance studio and they were doing older girl/sexy dances.

It made me uncomfortable so I put her in gymnastics when it ended. 5th graders from the same studio did a dance at our school carnival and I seriously wanted to tell all the dads to shut their eyes it was way to sexy for 10 year olds to be doing.

I'm not prude in any way but when it comes to my daughter....

Anyway, this was just the place that I went, I talked to JenM about Jilly's dance place and she said it's not like that at all. Just something to think about.

Also, the costumes can be expensive and beware that lots of the moms like to get the girls all glammed up at the salon with full makeup before the recitals which could be fun but might not be your cup of tea.

whoa.

that is NUTS.

thanks for that input.

supa - my town does not have anything like that thru parks & recs.  just soccer & t-ball etc (stuff we will have jake in in the spring, but emily probably still won't be ready).

April, what about your local gym?  Anna took her yoga class through our gym, and it was like Kelly described-it was acting things out, being animals and such.  She adored it.  I know my gym also offers ballet and other dance classes and they are more than the parks and recs stuff, but a LOT cheaper still than going to a dance studio or through a private instructor.

Either way, I am sure she will love it-and ITA that there is such a wide range in terms of coordination and such-just thought I might throw out a few money saving ideas.  Could be something to look into...

I know even our local community college has kid-based courses.  They are a lot more limited, but there are some.

i know that my gym does not offer anything for kids, but i will definitely check on the community colleges!  thanks for the idea!

Even though I don't have a kiddo in dance (DH nixed allowing Colin to take tap lessons) I just wanted to say that I think that lessons for Em would be great! At this age they aren't really coordinated enough to really be able to pull off anything but the basics so I think Em would be just fine! She'd be a beautiful ballerina!!!

$585 seems steep! Of course times have changed so much since my sisters and I danced (my little secret but I was no ballerina..I loved tap more than anything..I didn't need to be graceful like you did for ballet)...

Ooh! I can't wait till Adelaide is old enough! All this talk of dance lessons!!!! I can't wait to see pics of Emily in her tutu and her dance recital costumes.

If she does do it- let me know- My mom still might have all their dance gear and she was a nazi about the condition they kept it in. I'd be more than happy to see if she has any of it for you and Emily. And if she does still have any of it- its all top of the line

April,  just so you have an idea of price. I pay 360 (no costumes included) for 1/2 hr 1 day a week Sept-June.  So you are getting a half hour more and it works o ut then. I pay 36 a month. I know prices vary depending on city/area. That does not seem far off to me for NJ and a hour a week.

Crap, I pay almost 200 for soccer here and it is only 6 or 8 weeks and that is only 1/2 hr practice and 1/2 hr game on a Sat. That is including uniform though. So, in the big picture the dance is a good deal to me.
