4-H, county fairs, that sort of thing--

After our cake contest at church the other evening, my mom suggested that Henry enter something in the Mid-South Fair. I thought it was a great idea, and actually our mid-south fair has been moved to another county/state (Desoto County, MS if anyone is familiar with this area), and we have a much smaller, newer fair called the Delta Fair.

I looked up the handbook online to see if there was anything Henry would like to enter. The deadline for turning in entry forms was . . . YESTERDAY. Ugh.

So I looked up the Mid-South Fair site and printed out their handbook. It is farther away, but my in-laws live in that county so it isn't completely out of the question. I'm going to ask Henry if he wants to enter anything.

Also in years past, I've always gone to the fair with Kimberly, and our favorite thing there is the arts and crafts building--looking at all the quilts and handmade things and the photography contests. I always think about entering, but I never have.

Maybe Henry and I can both enter something.

Toni inspired me to look up our local 4-H but it doesn't seem very popular around here. I know they don't do anything through the schools.

So are any of your kids into this kind of thing? Either crafts or raising livestock? Any fair-type activity?

Not yet, but they LOVE the fair.

My dad's on the fair committee, so we always get in free, so we go almost every night.  Plus Presley's class goes during the day on one of the days for free and they ride all the rides for free.

I like free biggrin

No Stephen isn't. The only thing he did with 4h was shooting sports. 4h is big around here. I will involve Raven when she gets old enough. I'm talking more about the clubs at school, dog club(if we have one), speech/writing contest, shooting sports, etc. and not livestock. I love going to county fairs/festivals. I could spend every weekend for the next 3 months going to different county festivals.

It is not big here. I think it is more popular in more rural areas.

I think it is great for kids though. Too bad it is not more popular. I guess it is hard to raise those animals in the backyard in the suburbs, lol.

Here if we did animals we would have to board them.  The 4h will help get it started but it is still a lot of work.  Some places donate land/space for 4h animals.  My niece boards a horse(not for 4h).  The money and time involved is crazy.   I don't know why anyone would want animals that needed daily care unless they are on their property.

When I was kid, 4H came to our school (in the suburbs) once a month and they did lots of non-animal things. Photo contest, baking contest, that sort of thing. There's nothing like that at Henry's school or any other school around here anymore.

I enjoyed it as a kid.

yup, when I was a kid, we had a sewing club and all entered our little skirts we made in the state fair.  lol.

Im glad you reminded me of that Robin.  Our fair is coming up, and I remember wanting to bake something with Kiera for the kids contest. off to look...
