I am soooo scared of a fire.  What are you teaching your child?

So, do I teach Ivy that if she hears the smoke alarm to leave her room or wait for me?   I read that you should make a fire escape plan and meet outside, but what age?  and with us living in a 3 story house, it is even more confusing and scary.  We have two exits but they are on the first floor. and we have no fire escape on the second or third floors.  I bought one of these fire escape ladders but I just can't even imagine getting on that thing.

Allie's school brings in firemen and they go over this every year. Kids are suppose to stay in their room. They recommend shutting your child's door each night. You can also put a sticker in her window that indicates there is a child in there so that when they do a rescue they know what room to go to.

Jayna may be of more use on this one.

Make sure all fire detectors are working and everwhere throughout the house.

It is hard to cover all scenario's with a 4 year old, but a family emergency plan is always good to have.

Here is the red cross curriculum to teach K-2 students about fire safety. Maybe you can use some of this to talk to Ivy.

Thanks Melissa for the link...I just read through it.  It has some things in there that I need to teach her.

we had a fire when I was 14 and it is absolutely amazing how fast the fire spreads and the smoke overwhelms you.  Luckily, no one was hurt, although we lost all of our belongings.  (the firemen even rescued our cats).

One of the reasons I ok with her sleeping in my room or me in hers. My DH thinks I need to sleep in a panic room will all my kids to get a good nights sleep. I'm much better when he is home but I know he could do more to save them if needed. Stephen knows to go out his window if he hears the alarm or smells/sees smoke. I also don't like the kids in the room sticker because is someone was going to break in or kidnap a child they would know what room to go in.
