All I can say is as a woman who has struggled and still does struggle and will always struggle with her weight- this ad makes me furious. I think its wrong. And I don't like it. I think PETA needs to take it down. I don't care what the excuse. I don't care what the reason. If we're a supposed to not judge, if we're supposed to accept people for who they are on the inside versus the outside then this ad just shows that we don't.
yeah it is not politically correct, but for some reason it does not bother me.
I mean I have never been thin, but I know why I am not thin. I eat more calories then my body needs.
I am surprised they would put this up though. They are going to get some backlash from this one.
I absolutely see what you are saying BUT it's not the fact that they are calling overweight people out for being overweight that bothers me. It's the fact that they are calling overweight people whales. It's like we are all in elementary school again.
I also think it's absurb to imply that if you go vegetarian, you will lose weight. No. If you eat less and exercise more you will lose weight.
I had a VERY overweight housemate in college who was a vegetarian. She ate fettucine alfredo at least twice a week (homemade with one of those blocks of butter in it) and had more empty chips/candy/cookie wrappers hidden under her bed than I can count.
I do fully agree with you though... I know why I'm overweight and it is no one's fault but my own. And it is also NOT because I eat meat. That's the least of my problems when it comes to what I eat.
I just don't think that means that at the age of 32 I need to be called a whale.
Tjis may be wrong of me but the first thing i thought was it should have said save the pigs/ heffers. no one i know eats whale.
other than that yes i do think its offensive.
eta im sorry if my first statement is offensive, i mean more for marketing of dont eat meat. oh gosh now i look like a huge jerk

i was also thinking "who the hell eats whale" - hahha.
ok at least imnot the only one who wondered what whales have to do with being vegan, but then again i didnt know hot tubs did either.
No...I was wondering the same thing...What the hell does the "save the whales" have to do with being vegan
But- I thought the ad was overly offensive. I've battled with weight issues most of my life -since puberty- Most of it is my own fault- eating all the wrong things, not exercising enough. Some of it is genetics- I come from large stock on my father's side. And some of it is metabolic- And dangit- I did hear the names in school and it was so not fun. And I didn't enjoy being made fun of.
And those kids didn't enjoy it either when I learned how to hit back either but that's beside the point...
But that ad really brings it all back. What happened to embracing people of all sizes, shapes, and colors? I much prefer the Chik-Fil-A ads with the cow that says, "Eat More Chikin" ok? At least the cow is out to save itself. Why not have a whale holding a sign that says, "Eat More Veggies?" I could live with that....
Or a Chicken or a Pig holding a sign saying "Save The Chickens. Go Vegan." With the chicken in a bikini...That's not offensive....
But an overweight broad in a polka dot bikini that...that's wrong..ok...wrong..WTF is wrong with PETA for going there?
Maybe I oughta run around butt nekkid in my leather coat screaming "SAVE THE SQUASH! EAT THE STEAK!"

very true - I am just so surprised their marketing and ad people really thought this was going to fly. Maybe that is why they did it. They say negative attention is better then none. Maybe they are trying to push their message. PETA is like that, so I guess I am not surprised.
PETA makes me sick. I think there are genuine members who are good people, that care about what the actual letters stand for. As an organization, though, they are all about shock value. I'm all about ethical treatment of animals (I always praise them for their intense yumminess ) but not at the expense of ethical treatment of humans.
I think the end of the article you linked to Jennie sums up my feeling precisely:
"Well, you've got our attention, PETA. And we are reminded why we don't like you. It's not funny to make fun of people's weight problems, and to assert you know why they're occurring is wrong-headed and judgmental and, well, just like you."
I will say, though, that I think we are quickly coming to an end of whatever politically correct "protection" that may have once been granted to overweight people that keep them from being the butt of jokes (not that I agree with it, just that it's a reality). If we're all paying for one another's healthcare, I think people will feel justified in harassing overweight people under the guise of "your fat costs me money."
(At which time I know I personally will invite them to come to the gym with me, and then watch them STFU. LOL!)
PETA sucks. I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals, but I'm not for douchebags engaging in douchebaggery.
