hives?!

connor has been getting hives for a week straight. i DID switch detergents a week ago, but have switched back and rewashed his bedding and whatever clothes i had washed in the new stuff. also, a week ago i bought a glade plug in scented oil thing that i put in the hall outside his bedroom, but i have since removed that too. i also bought a new candle and have stopped burning that as well. still, he wakes up every day fine--walks out of his room and starts scratching and then the hives arrive.

we have been having him sleep naked so it isn't something on his clothes and when it starts he hasn't eaten breakfast yet, so it isn't food either. yesterday his face and lips got puffy too so i ended up bringing him to the pedi--just the 10 minute drive and 20 minute wait in the waiting room and they went away without benadryl, so i am guessing it isn't a virus either. i can't think of ANYTHING else in my house that is making this happen, but i feel awful. any ideas??

blah :(

this just happened to bennett this past week. we had to give him benadryl for several days and then we stopped giving him milk. they haven't returned and i haven't given him milk again.

i'm planning to take him to the ped allergist to see if milk was the reason.

i would try giving him benadryl a couple of times a day for a few days and see if they stay away after that??

i have definitely been giving him the benadryl, but we are at a week of twice daily benedryl at this point.

the pedi just said give him a teaspoon everytime he gets them. ugh. i really need to figure out the issue b/c benadryl makes him craaazy and unbearable, not sleepy at all.

i feel like i have eliminated everything, but it is probably something SO obvious and i am just not thinking of it.

corey - that has got to be so frustrating.

have you checked the "allergy" report? like see if ragweed or tree pollen is going crazy in your area?

what about foods? any new foods or new brands of food for him?

new bathroom cleaner? (like on the floor or toilet)

dishwasher detergent?

i'm trying to think ....

having dealt with allergies with two children now.  owen's enviromental and household and keegan's food allergies.  i am shocked he wanted you to keep adminstering the benedryl that much.

my boys can have benedryl from time to time but that is one medicine that they do not want them on daily. both peditrician and allergist told me this.  i at the moment can't remember the exact reason it cannot be used as a daily med but both have told me that.

for instance owen is on zyrtec everyday as well as his nasal spray and occasionally xyzal but the rest of the meds are beyond my point.

at this point i think i would ask for a referal to a pediatric allergist. or just call one in your area if you do not have to be referred.

any new bath wash or lotion for him? sunscreen? new foods, drinks or snacks he has been eating?

I would double/triple/quadruple wash those sheets if he's waking up with them.

I'd even put new sheets on for a night, ones that were never washed in the new detergent, and see if wakes up with them again.

thats the thing. he wakes up fine, naked, without having eaten a thing.
leaves his room, walks into the hallway and they start popping up.

so.frustrating!

Did you throw away the scented oil thing? Is it still in the house?

Have you had your carpets cleaned recently?  I know that the carpet cleaner detergent makes E have a rash.

What about your air filter for your house?  Have you changed it?  Maybe that would help.

What about you?  Are you wearing a new fragrance or using a new bath soap?

What are the temps like there right now?  You said you don't have central air so I'm wondering if it could be heat rash?  I get that almost every day at some point in this hot humid weather here.  Where are the hives located and do they keep coming back in those same areas?

I was also wondering if you have your house or yard treated for bugs? If so, he could be reacting to the pesticides.

it is definitely hot for MA right now--it has been 90ish all week. they are head to toe, raised, and come and go over in different areas (but all over).

no bug treatments here.

If it happens when he walks out of his room where the oil plugs were I would suggest wiping down the wall where it was plugged in and maybe clean the carpets(if u have them in the hallway).

Hope they go away soon.
