school supplies- jumbo pencils?

so on corene's school supply list, they requested jumbo pencils.

anybody else run across this? i'm a bit confused by it, because they have been practicing writing letters for a year now with regular pencils.

is there a reason they prefer jumbo pencils?

This is just a personal opinion, but I think the jumbo pencils are better for beginning writers. In just simple observation in my own children, I have seen a decrease in handwriting neatness and I directly correlate it to the fact that oklahoma schools have seemed to decide that jumbo crayon and pencils are evil :) and that we should only use regular size pencils and crayons. I love the jumbo pencils and crayons. I wish our school system used them!

i think the jumbo thing is a good move - i have read that until kids are about 5, their fine motor muscles are not refined enough to grasp a regular pencil, so it's better to practice writing with a larger instrument -- it should help strengthen the muscles.

I'm surprised jumbo anything is used. I would question that since she was already using regular pencils. All the kids here start with regular pencils(even ones with fine motor skill issues).
