...i *think* i decided...

to pursue my child clinical neuropsych license.
i'm about 2 years away from that, but probably 4 yrs if i worked part time.
i need some post-doc training and then to pass an exam.  if i hit some inflexibility, i might have to back up and redo an internship (which i feel OK about if it comes to it), though i do have a clinical internship and externship so i think it should be fine.

i think it makes the most sense as a next step for this career. i'm sour on the professor thing - last semester did me IN, the money is crap, and there's no funding. (plus, since i DO love teaching and feel i was designed to teach, i can always do it part time and still live the experience).

i contacted a local neuropsych eval center here. i plan (right now anyway) to talk to my boss at some point in the near future about connections he has. i feel totally OK doing it on a part time basis, even though it might take a WHILE to finally get the license...it's a good field and there'll be work, and there'll be research potential, and teaching potential, and it won't close ANY doors (as opposed to some of my other career ideas). plus the salary is like WAY more than what a prof makes.  i'm feeling good about this.

(isnt it amazing how sometimes everything clarifies? i had a creativity spurt today and made a flower collage (whatever blah blah) and it's like my brain reorganized during that task, and i had this energy that just led me to reach out and contact this place with little-to-no thought. it's something i've been agonizing over for years, and all of a sudden i was like "this is what i should do."  it's amazing).

this is very attainable for me. very. i'm like 90% of the way there already. it's just a matter of a few good contacts and finding some flexibility.  i'll keep you posted smile

youre probably not as far away from the PhD as you think.  how does the PhD work in teaching? administration, right? i dont know a ton about it.  but i do know that all my principals have been PhDs. is that a thought for you?

well, i could do a PhD in english and just keep teaching, but i wouldn't.  unless i decide to teach at a university, which for now is not really a consideration.

i will probably go the administrative route.  it's probably a 2 year program, but that's just for a master's in school administration.

that is definitely my long-term goal.  but knowing how much summer time i'd lose, plus longer days and evening commitments to activities in the school, it's just not something i'm willing to pursue when my kids are so little.

i envision at some point applying for a grad assistant program.  that way i can teach as a GA, work on another master's and get paid a little while going to school for free.  :dunno

ug but wouldnt it be cheaper to get a PhD in administration? i find that they charge you like crazy for an MA, while the PhD is usually fully funded in the same field.  i like the admin idea for you better than the professor idea ;) (but i'm just jaded).

can you come over for a glass of wine & cookies so we can further discuss? i'll see you in 1.5 hrs. thanks.

diagnosing neuro issues, learning disabilities, evaluating kids, writing reports, working with parents and teachers to plan cognitive interventions, etc.

i think it varies by facility but that would be the gist.

i've contacted a few neuropsychologists that i'm friends with (that i went to grad school with - a few friends pursued this and i always felt like i would too, but then had kids before i could really start). they're very close friends, and in the NY area, so could definitely be useful connections :)

yes the avatar is rachel's doing - the artwork is cracking me UP lately. so cute.

I really admire you for having those "Ah ha!' moments and then doing something about them.

Good luck and keep us posted!  It really sounds like you are a hop, skip and jump away and have all the connections you need already!!
