Ideas for covering "well-used" furniture?

We got hand me down furniture for Kate's room from my niece's old bedroom.  We are glad because we really didn't want to buy her a set for this house, but the furniture is...well...trashed.

The tops of both the nightstand and the low dresser (with mirror) have nail polish, scratches, permanent pen, etc.  I have tried everything I can to clean them up, but there is only so much I can do.

I can't paint the tops or anything because it isn't our furniture, so I am wondering if anyone has some creative ideas for covering those spots?  I was thinking of getting some fabric and making something for the top of each, but I would love to hear ideas from you all too!  They need something-it just isn't acceptable the way they are.

Thoughts?

TIA ladies!!!

Hey laura....do you have a picture?  I was reading a blog recently where she used mayo to get some water stains out, but I don't know if it is the same thing you have or not.  Also, what about just staining the furniture?  (or would that be considered the same as painting?)

I'll take some pics tomorrow and upload them.

I could ask my BIL and SIL if they mind us altering the furniture.  TBH, I am surprised they even kept it (he is fixed and their kids are getting older, so they don't need it), but I wouldn't want to do anything unless I asked.  I had thought about painting/stenciling, but then if someone else did want to use it, it would be all girly, kwim?

I am not sure what all of the stains are-but I'll take pics and maybe someone else will know!!!

Thanks Liz!

Sorry to /pj but this was my thought too.  I really don't think if they gave it to you and it was in that condition that they would mind if you painted/stained/etc it at all.  I would ask first too but I bet you anything they'll say of course. smile

Supa if they don't want you to paint or stain it, I do have a couple of ideas that may work.  You could use fabric and stick it to the top of the furniture.  Here is how you do it for walls, but I think the same would apply to furniture:

http://myhomeredux.typepad.com/blog/2009/03/how-to-put-fabric-on-walls-using-starch.html

You could also just try wallpaper.  If you want it really plain than don't pick a pattern, but use something with texture instead.

PLACEMATS! LOL

I have an old bedside table in a corner of the livingroom (it has a lamp, plant, bricabrac, photos, etc, on it). I keep things in the drawers for daniel. Anyway, the top is....not pretty...so I went to the dollar store and just bought cheap placemats to use as a cover. I bought a few of them so I can toss one in the laundry every few days when i dust and just replace it with a clean one.

You could get some plexi glass or some clear plastic cut to the shape of the dresser top and put anything under it. like pic a certain material. picture, etc. do you know what I mean? Kind of like what you may see on a desk at an office, but most people have info under then and not pretty things.

Oops-I forgot to take pics!!!

Thanks everyone for the input! I think for now we will just use an old placemat on at least the nightstand, and go from there. I like all of the ideas, I just need to figure out what will be the best option for us!!

Thank you!!
