I'm not crafty...but I would paint it a fun bright color.
Also for those larger sections, I would use a basket or stackable tray. Basket=use for pens, tape, other office supplies. Tray=easier to sort papers. Or if the space was large enough you could use a mini-file drawer and use hanging folders.
You could also get some sticky paper (shelf paper, sticky wrapping paper) if you do not want to paint. I agree, get some baskets for a few of the larger holes, or even one of the thin ones, for pencils, pens, scissors, etc.
Where is it going? What colors are in that room. I say paint for sure . What color is hard to say without seeing the room it will go in. I would get cool trays for it also.
I am not sure what material it is, but if it is not a surface you can really paint, you can cover it in wall paper or fabric (spray adhesive will keep the fabric on). You could also do a faux surface to make it crackled, leather looking, marbled, etc. Just use the faux painting you would do on a wall. They make an easy to use crackle paint and most diy type stores have it. Faux painting sounds hard, but it's pretty easy and forgiving.
it's a hutch, right? where is it going? do you just want to 'touch" it up or do you want to paint it?
it is a mail sorter or desk organizer. I got it from work. the shelves are adjustable. It is not real wood.
I was thinking of covering it in a fabric or something.
painting it a bright color is a good idea. I think I would have to sand it or put a primer on it b/c it is a slick surface.
the picture is from my phone so it's not a good one.
I want it to go somewhere in the dining room/my makeshift office. it isn't a hutch - it will have to be set on a table or something. my desk is about twice the width of the sorter so I really can't sit it there . . . although I don't really sit at the desk - I've resorted back to using the dining room table as my desk - the real desk just isn't big enough.
