Steam Cleaning a carpet remnant?

We have a large carpet remnant that we have used in the living room of the apartment for 4 years.  We have industrial carpetting underneath, which was too hard as Tristen was learning to walk.   Anyway, it is pretty dirty at this point.  Travis would like to use it in the kids playroom.  I get his reasoning.  We'll put down wood laminate, but this will soften the space and frankly, protect the floor.  How do I clean this?  Can I use a normal steam cleaner even though there is industrial carpeting underneath?  I was thinking maybe steam clean it on top of the industrial carpeting- move it outside to dry- then clean the carpet underneath since we would probably have to do that before we officially move out anyhow.

Anyone have any tips?
