painting wallpaper??

Yeah I know, not ideal.

We have the UGLIEST wall paper in the living room.  Stunningly ugly.

The reality is we need to pull down the old plaster and sheetrock the room.  It isn't an expensive project, but it is low on the priority list.  We have enough projects running to last us until spring, and as soon as spring hits we have outside projects that will run us until fall.  Fall needs to be the master bedroom.  The absolutely earliest we would get to the living room is next winter- IF all the other projects stay on track (meaning, unlikely.  Maybe the following spring/summer/fall?)

I'm not a picky girly, I've never even bothered to paint the apartments I've lived in- but I'm imagining being at home everyday looking at those gross walls.  The wallpaper is probably from the late 50s early 60s.

Since we have no chance of salvaging the walls anyway- do you think it would be a horrible idea to temporaily paint the walls?  I know you shouldn't if you plan to peel the paper- but we can't peel it.  We tried in the dining.  It needs new sheetrock.

I'lm clueless about such things.  Thoughts?

You can certainly ain't over it (we had friends do it when they found out their wallpaper was load bearing and structurely significant - the joys of old houses). You could also wall paper over it which could give you a nice fresh start. Home depot had paintable wall paper. Not too expensive.

Travis meantioned the paintable wallpaper at some point.  I may need to look into it.  The wallpaper isn't smooth on one wall where the house shifted sometime in the last 50 years.  I'll for sure look at that.  I'm looking for a project that is do-able for me to complete since the doesn't "notice" the wallpaper at all.  Stupid boy.

I'd just buy regular, not offensive wallpaper. I wouldnt say that if you had to pull it off again but if you are going to drywall it, this would be my choice. I wouldn't bother with paint at all.

Good feedback.  I'll look at that option too.

My parents had textured paint in the dining room in their house, and used paintable wallpaper over it. It lasted a long time-probably at least 15 or so years-before they felt they needed to do something about the seams. It may have been longer. You would have never known it was a paintable wallpaper.

I would either just paint right over what you have or buy wall paper that has a rather vague design on it like this
http://www.homedepot.com/Decor-Wallpaper-Wallpaper/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbnn4Z1z0znqo/R-202656000/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&superSkuId=203076736

There is also a way to use fabric on your walls that would probably work but I am not as familiar with that. My decision would most likely be based on cost and time consumption. Not worth putting much of either one into it.

I would just paint over it. Spackle any seams and then paint.

LOL!!!  yes, it looks lovely ;)

It actually looks like it might be fairly easy to paint over (but, it is also pretty easy to spackle over any seams)

No, some kind of weird ferns and I think pincones or something.  They left pictures on the walls for so long that it yellowed around where they had stuff up.  And for an accent wall- there is an entire wall of knotty pine paneling - not even like the tongue and groove kind.  Oh no.  Like someone sanded down some cheap plywood, stained it, and called it country.

Oh, but the lightswitch is plastic with a red painted bird on it.  And a built in thermometer.

oh, and given the furniture (you can see the couch in the background too), what color might you go with?  The room opens to the kitchen which is also wallpapered with morron-ish flowers and white wood on the bottom.

There is no way for us to get new furniture- that furniture is new to us as it is.

Also, for now, the one wood paneled wall will stay (until we rip out the plaster).  We learned from the dining room paneling = plaster is REALLY bad shape underneath.  Not opening that until we are ready to demo.

I was thinking sort of a cinnamon brown type color?  It is a well-lit room, but I'm looking for warmer colors.

You could paint it that color. You could also go with some gray or blue gray tones and it should work. You need Liz. She has some colors along those lines that are awesome. Then again, she may have other suggestions that are the most awesome ever because she is talented like that.

I was going to suggest grey.  I love grey and Navy together.  With white or cream accents/ baseboards etc.

I'd probably pull that lighter color from the couch. I think that would look awesome with the navy-blue.

oh and one more "suggestion" lol   If you are looking to add some warmth and texture, try bamboo blinds (you could leave the white shades up, but layer the bamboo over-top) that just looks so good with navy blue.  (btw, they sell them very cheap at home depot). if you're interested, let me know, and i'll look for them for you and link you to them. (I think I paid around $18 per shade) but, i have long windows.
