cars: lease vs buy

I'd love some feedback from those of you have have leased a car in the past.

My car is old and needs expensive repairs every couple of months. In the last two weeks I have had to replace the starter and two tires (cause the alignment in the back is so bad, it is causing the tires to wear unevenly but they are unable to properly align it at this point without completely taking apart the back end) and now I have an oil leak.

Also, it's tight with the five of us.

We have payments on Dustin's car and were hoping to wait til his car is paid off next year before we replace my car. But with the amount of problems I've been having, we are considering leasing instead.

Thoughts?

alyssa,

i have leased 2 or 3 times. typically it's because i like a NEW car and the payments are lower.

typically, it will cost you about $2000-3000 up front to get into the lease and then lower payments.

the problem is at the end of your lease, you have no equity. so you have to be prepared to have cash on hand to either go into another lease or buy another car.

also, they will bang you for any damage on the car - scratches, dents, etc. and mileage is expensive, so make sure you have a good idea of how many miles you put on your car each year.

the best experience i had with leasing was with my odyssey. at the end of the lease i was over the mileage AND had damage so i was going to have to PAY around $3,000 at the end of my lease. however, because it was worth more than the buyout price of the lease, i took it to a dealer who looked it over and offered me $450 over the buyout price. that was perfect for me because i didn't have to deal with buying it and reselling it myself. and i didn't have to cough up $3000.

long story short, there are pros and cons. just make sure you really are aware of the cons.

I use to always lease be because the deals were so good and my payments so low,br not the auto world is not as great.we actually bought out both our leases this past year. Because the deal were awful when we needed to either lease or buy.

Leases are fine if you do not drive a ton and or want a new car every tow or three years.
