ipad and ipod touch question--
Permalink

Okay, the kids and I have GREATLY exceeded my data plan usage for my brand-new iphone 3gs. I only got it Friday evening.

So, here's my question. If we got an ipad or ipod touch, would we have to pay for another monthly data plan? Do those use data plans?

Just curious.

Thanks!

You can get them with it, but they only use wifi in some and that doesn't need it I was wondering about that, dh says anything besides unlimited data is a ripoff since you can't do anything.

robin - I got the $15 data plan at the beginning and like you I was almost over in 2 weeks.  so I upped to the $25 data plan and the ATT lady told me I could never go over it and she is right.  I'm on the internet a ton on my phone and have NEVER came close to going over.  I know it's $10 more a month but you really should consider it - it will be so much better than constantly monitoring your usage and/or paying per mb or kb or whatever it is when you go over.  that would far exceed that $10 up charge I would guess.

and I have an itouch and it is wifi - you can only get internet where there is free wifi.

oh, another thing for your iphone - you can turn the wifi option on in your settings so that you are not actually using your data plan when you are somewhere that has wifi (do you have wireless internet at home?  if so just use your home service via the wifi option when you're there and you won't be using your data plan).

 Interesting.

Yes, we do have wireless at home. Is it easy to change the wifi setting?

Also Glen upgraded to the next higher plan as soon as I told him we went over. He said we'd watch it for a few months to see how much we're using, then maybe drop back down.

Funny thing is we've only been playing with it AT HOME where we have wireless internet.

Thanks!

And so the answer to my other question was--?? No, you don't have to pay a monthly fee for an ipad or an ipod touch?? Or yes, you do.

no no monthly plan for a touch. and for an ipad you can do either. quite frankly when my kids play with my touch i turn the wifi off so they don't send emails or buy anything i dont want them to, so long as they are just playing an app you generally dont need it, i dont let them on the internet unsupervised.

I was going to ask if you had your wifi turned on and if you have wireless. With my old smartphone I had the $15 plan and was fine but I mainly used my wifi at home. The one time I did go over was when I was staying at a friends without wifi for a week and used it to check my email. If you have ATT you can log in to your account online and change your plan to the $25 plan and set it to go back to the first day of your last billing cycle and you won't get any overage charges (which are $15 so you'll save $5)

If you are only playing it at home then your wifi on your phone must not be turned on

 Okay, confused.

We have been playing with the phone at home only.

We do have wireless internet.

So on my phone--do I turn the wifi on? Or off?

Also, Glen saw the option of upgrading and backdating to avoid the overage charges, so that's what we did. Thanks!

I didn't watch this whole thing but I think it shows you how to turn your wifi on http://www.butterscotch.com/tutorial/Getting-The-IPhone-3G-Online-With-Cellular-Or-WiFi

Also, my kids have been enjoying playing the games on my phone SO much that I was thinking about getting them ipod touches or ipads for Christmas. Once I looked at the outrageous price of an ipad, I'm thinking ipod touches. However, those are really pricey as well. They wouldn't get much else from us for Christmas.

My brother got my nephew an iphone (with no phone service) so he could play games on it. I'll have to ask how much he paid.

You want the wifi turned on. I leave mine on at all times then you can use wifi other places (friend's homes, starbucks, anywhere that has wireless)

We've bought refurbished iPods from the apple store before and have not had any problems. They are a lot cheaper than buying brand new and the kids won't even know. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod?mco=OTY2ODY2NQ

jake and kate love my itouch.  since I have the iphone now they really are the only ones that play with it.    i think you could look into refurbished ones that might not be as expensive as new.

robin - if you have the wifi turned on your phone will constantly look for wifi service and ask you if you want to connect to it.
initially you are going to have to log your phone into your wireless service at home using your password, etc. after that your phone will always recognize it.
the same will apply other places - i.e., if you log on at mcdonalds one time every time you go to mcdonalds your phone will find and log you into the service.
sometimes you have to go to a website and agree to their terms of service b/f it will log you on.

My iPod runs off my wifi. And any wifi in an area with an open network. Its mainly how I FB at school

That being said...I got all giddy thinking about saving $$ on a refurbished iPad until I saw the prices--wowzers.

I was going to give the kids my iPod and upgrade but nevermind!

You got all good advice. We got our big boys ipods last year. They are still constantly played and Keegan is already asking for one this year. Has been for months.

They got those from "Santa" then like one thing from us that was not real pricey at all then stockings. But really has been a gift worth while.
