Need help with bedroom - PINTEREST!!!

Ok, I love pinterest. Love it. I have so many ideas for the house now and I am starting to change things up little by little. I have no headboard in my bedroom so I am thinking about doing something like this:

I really think I can do this, with a few variations. So - I like this dark color - do I paint, stain or spray paint? What will be the easiest/cheapiest way to do that?

Also, I just bought this from target:

I also made something like this to hang over the lamp:

Mine is covered in fabric and the frame is black. The fabric has burgundy, taupe, teal, gray and a few variations of those colors. It's not really bold or loud, but does have color to it.

So, I am wondering - on a bigger scale (sheets, lamps, etc) does burgundy, gray and taupe work? I might try and pop some teal in there too but I don't know how that is going to work together. I want to work with a lot of my existing things so I have the gray lamp, a taupe bedskirt and a few different sets of taupe colored sheets. What I'm wanting is a plain comforter. Initially I wanted a gray color but I don't see that going well with a taupe bedskirt. So, now I'm thinking a burgundy comforter with taupe bedskirt? IDK. I need some help.

Fwiw, I really like burgundy with taupe. Not so much taupe with gray, but both can be good accents with the burgundy to balance them out. I don't have any knowledge on stain vs. paint for the headboard, but can't wait to see pics of the finished room when you get to that point!

Yeah, I'm thinking it would be burgundy and taupe with gray being a random accent color (lamp, pillow). Doug is already going crazy with my projects so he is going to love when I do this.

Also, the problem I have is that I've always been so matchy matchy. I want to expand my horizons a little bit. I want it to come together and look nice without it being all of the same stuff over and over - curtains, bedding, accessories, etc. I do want to stick with solid colored bedding though I wouldn't mind a decorative accent (I can't remember what they are called) at the bottom of the bed. Not necessary a folded blanket but that same idea - I always see them in hotels and can never remember their name.

I am really not set on these colors. I would like to keep working with the khaki sheet sets that I have. I have a khaki colored bedskirt as well as a light teal type of color. The more I think about it - I don't think Doug would want a bright burgundy comforter. Ugh. I hate picking out bedding.

Super cute juni! I'm stealing this idea from you. I would stain. Maybe home depot would have some wood that you'd like. They'll cut it to your size for you too. There are a bunch of mom and pop places out here that I could get that rustic wood but I don't know by you. Maybe a nursery. They might sell planks to make nursery beds. As far as being matchy matchy, I'm the same. I find that getting throw pillows with your colors and colors you never thought to put in a room can help. Like bringing in candles to match the colors in the pillows.

That was my other thought - to just do a rectangular headboard. But I think I'm going this route instead.

Kristi - I was just going to buy the wood at Lowe's or HD. I love the dark color in the picture...I think I will go with a stain. Also - they used 2" thick wood and I'm only going to do a 1" thick piece I think so it isn't as heavy as theirs.
