Question re: adopting in Southern California
Permalink

My sister is in the very early stages of adoption. She is in her early 40's and wasn't able to conceive. So, now they are looking into surrogacy/adoption and she has no idea where to start. It's hard because I don't think she wants to put it out there that they are doing that but then she also can't find someone that has done it, kwim?

Any advice? Any info? I'm SO excited they are lookig into this. They will be great parents and I hope it all works out. :)

Maybe you can email Dana.  I dont think she is technically SoCal,she is more northern.  She is on facebook and I know others (Megan?) will have her email.

I will put my feelers out amongst local friends and LYK if I learn anything. :)

I don't think I am in touch with anyone who has adopted here, but there is a teacher at the Y that adopted her daughter from the foster care system, and she had her from birth. (I met the daughter at a gymnastics class Mason was in, and OMG I could have put her in my pocket and brought her home. She was SO cute and sweet, but had a rough start being born to a drug-addicted mom.)

I don't live in California, but have gone through the process. It just depends on what route they take. We went through Catholic Charities, and you do NOT have to be Catholic. It does take time. She could also go the private adoption route, but either way they will need to have a home study. The agency will do the home study or the attorney will point you in the direction of one. I will say that Catholic Charities (which is available in most places) works with both sides so there is less of a chance of the adoption falling through. Also the process can become rather invasive feeling.

Thanks, I will let her know. They are catholic and I mentioned checking with their church to see so I will let her know about this. Thanks so much!

If they decide to go to Catholic Charties and have questions, let me know.  It might be the same for other agencies too.  I wish them luck and hope it goes smoothly however they decide.
