Switch to pre-natal or just get extra folic acid?

Hi all.  So unless Bill has a sudden change of heart (which is totally possible), we are going to be starting our TTC efforts after my upcoming visit from AF. (due sometime late this week)

I JUST got a new bottle of women's vitamins.  I debated about getting prenatal, but with Bill still on the fence about it when I bought them, I didn't.  So I don't want to waste them.  Do you think it is ok just to add some additional folic acid, or are the prenatals much better all around?  I was looking at some today at Target, and they had more of other things as well (like iron, but because of all of my blood loss earlier in the year, the GI has me taking iron just as a part of my regular supplementation, so I really don't need the extra), but it is missing some of the other things.

So would you get prenatals or just get folic acid to add to the regular vitamins?

Asides from a regular multiple, you really need extra folic acid and iron.

If you already have the extra iron covered, I would say just add some colic acid as well.

You can always take prenatal once your current multis are gone.

Good luck!!!

I meant to add that since I already took multis, my gyneo only prescribed extra iron and folic for me. I was also taking coq10 and acetyl l carnitine and she had me stop those while preggo breastfeeding.

i would probably just start on the prenatal so your getting it as soon as possible when you get pg anyway.

But it depends on the shelf life of the vitamins you just bought.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a prenatal than add all the other things you need to a regular but Idrk.

I take prenatal vitamins even though I have no intentions of becoming pregnant, or at least I take them when I remember. For me it would be worth it because it's once less pill to swallow, one less bottle to put away, and one less thing to keep track of. Also, if you call into your doc's office and tell them you are ttc and would like to take prenatal vitamins, they most likely write you a script. I don't know what stores in your area will do this, but there are many that will just give you the vitamins. Here Meijer and a grocery store chain do. That way you would not be out anymore money.

I'd just go with pre-natals.

Why?

Because that just spells pregnancy, and it makes me giddy, lol.

I think you'd be fine either way.

I'm so stoked for you!!! Hoping it happens healthily, quickly and with uhm... nice fun... woot!

Thanks ladies (and thanks for the baby dust, Tracy!! I hope it works...though I am not sure Bill does, lmao. He agreed to it, but he said he still thinks we are insane for doing it. He does NOT feel coerced though-I made sure of that. This was his decision.).

I am not really concerned about adding extra pills-I take about 40 pills a day as it is, so adding folic acid on its own would not be any big deal, kwim? My pill organizer is chock full anyway. And the thing about the iron is that I take the slow fe because it doesn't mess with my system. IDK what kind of iron is in the prenatals.

I'll look at the shelf life on my vitamins (and of COURSE I got the value size, lol) and go from there.

But Megan, I will have to make sure I give the list of supplements I take to my OB/GYN. I take sooooo many things, I may have to stop some, IDK. I hope not, since I have reason for taking all of them, but better to be safe.

lmao!!!!

Thanks Leah!  I hope it works out.  I am going to try not to get my hopes up because I have my doubts about whether or not anything will come to fruition. We'll see-I am just glad Bill is giving the go ahead to try!

How much folic acid is in OJ? Maybe you could just drink some to get the folic acid while you take the multi??? I have no clue.

WOO HOO!!! Glad we'll be TTC at the same time

IDK-I could look into it.  I know the multi has 400 and the prenatal has 800.

Yay!!!  How are you feeling about the whole thing?  I am going to try and be relaxed about it, but I am sure that won't last long. I'll admit, I am nervous about it. We haven't actually tried to get pg since Anna!

I don't know how I'm feeling. When I see my sisters newborn I'm like "wow they are a lot of work and she looks so tired" but then when I babysit my friends newly one year old I'm like "man I miss that age"

I've been feeling kind of down lately though because my skin has been HORRIBLE since stopping the pill and I haven't had a period (which I knew was probably going to be where I was) THANKS PCOS. So I'm trying to be all laid back about it and be like well if it happens it happens but I kind of want it to happen NOW since there will already be 6 years age difference between Lucas and baby 2.

ITU!!!  Whenever I think about caring for a newborn again, being up at night, dealing with diapers, etc, I cringe and wonder what we are thinking.  But then my neighbor's baby smiles at me and I remember. heart.gif

I'm so sorry about your acne issues and that your cycles haven't started. That is rough-and ITU what you mean about wanting it to happen now.  It is hard to be patient once you have made the decision to try. Is there anything you can do about your cycles?  Can they give you anything or is it more a hit or miss kind of thing?  My cousin has PCOS, but hers was so bad she had to have laproscopic surgery before getting pg the first time. And I know she wants another one, but her doc told her he would not do the procedure again unless she lost weight.  She is trying her best, but I ache for her. It has been so hard.

I'm praying it happens quickly for you, Kari-it really is hard to be patient.  Are you charting or anything?

I talked to Bill again last night and asked him how he wanted to go about this whole thing once AF is gone (my period is due Friday/Saturdayish), and I kinda thought he would just say he had changed his mind, lol. I asked if he wanted to just have a free for all, or if he wanted to try and time it. He said he wants to try and time it. I think that is nice and all, and I can see how much he really does want a boy, but I haven't been charting, so IDK how close we'll get to that. I have a round about idea, and I did start taking temps again once he agreed to TTC (mostly so that I'll have the data to show the OB/GYN if things don't work out because I don't really think they will-I figure it is good to have the info to show them), but it could be a couple of months before I could really pinpoint it, and we are only going to try through January.   After that we are going to take a break until late summer into fall. That will be the last ditch effort time-I told him if it doesn't happen by Christmas NEXT year, we're done.

Anyway-rambling over. It is nice to have someone else trying at the same time. I just hope we both graduate from the TTC fast!
