If your kindergartner has homework what is it? Also do you have a hard time getting them to do it? Right now for the next 4 weeks Dominic's is cutting out 5 pictures that begin with the letter of the day and 5 words cut out and glue on the page the teacher provides. I did not think already I would have problems getting him to do it! Everyday I tell him it is homework time, I find the pictures for him, he just has to cut them and glue them. It is so hard to make him focus and just do it, instead of it taking maybe 15 minutes it takes us an hour. This is where I really worry about him having ADHD. It is like he just can't concentrate on it and he is always messing around or trying to do something else. It is so frustrating! He can concentrate to play a freaking video game for like 2 hours but can't do this for 15 minutes, I don't get it. Everyday is a battle. Is anybody else going through this? I thought he would be excited to do it and it was something we could do together but I just dread it everyday because I know it will be the same thing.

No real homework yet. Thank goodness.

I feel for you. School is a lot of work (for us). :)

Here's what Holly's homework was tonight:

"Write a row of uppercase and lowercase Vv's. Draw pictures of words beginning with the letter and sound."

It usually takes her about 10-15 minutes, and she hasn't given me any trouble about doing it.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time with Dominic!

Lucas comes home with 3 (sometimes more) worksheets on Monday night and they are due Friday morning. We usually do one a night. This week one worksheet is for him to trace his name (he already knows how to write it but it's good practice) the other two sheets practice a letter (both uppercase and lower case) This week is N and I forget the other one. We generally have a pretty easy time but sometimes Lucas gets MAD if you correct him (like telling him his 5 is backwards)

So far homework only comes on Fridays. I can't remember before but this Friday it was a worksheet where you write the letter n under the pictures that start with "n" and color only the pictures that start with "n." Then you had to draw six pictures that started with n. It took quite a while and Gavin did really well. After the worksheet and 3 pictures he had been sitting a while and getting antsy so we stopped and came back to it later.

Mark gets a worksheet sent home on Monday that is due on Friday. It has a short activity for each day Monday through Thursday. Each day, it says to practice counting to 25. On Monday, he had to trace a bunch of capital and lowercase t's. Oh, man, and I just saw that he was supposed to bring in a picture of something that started with t by today. Dang it.

On Tuesday, he had to trace the sight words they're learning: I, a, to, am, little, the, red.

On Wednesday, he has to trace the number 5 through 10 a few times.

On Thursday, he is supposed to circle the pictures that start with T. There are six pictures.

At the parent meeting, his teacher told us that the homework should never last more than 10 to 15 minutes. If it did, we should stop.

Starting in October we will get a packet of homework for the month. it will be anything from practicing letters to drawing a picture to reading outloud. It's supposed to take no more then 5-10 minutes and it's only real purpose is to get the kids used to the idea of homework (1st grade gets really heavy on homework and after that forget it's a ton) and also practicing some basic skills. I can't wait to have homework, it will help us establish even more of a night time routine.

connor's teacher said she would rather the parents spend 20 minutes reading to their kid before bed than spend time on homework. easy for us since we do stories every night anyways.

on fridays he has got an actual assignment, like fill out an "all about me" page. also, once a week she sends home a book for them that they should be able to practice reading to a parent. each week the book gets progressively harder...like the first week it was- a is for... (and then a picture) b is for...(and then a picture) -super easy to read.

Jasmine, Joe's homework is pretty much the same as mentioned here, seems simple stuff but it was taking Joe forever and was getting on my nerves. This last week though I changed my tactics. I made sure he did it in short 10 minute blocks over the week and also I changed my attitude about it. I just got the sheet we were working on and explained to him what he needed to do and then left him to it. He managed to get it done and I didn't sit looking over his shoulder which seems to stress us both out. Oh and also I got some little workbook thing out for Bel to do and called it her "homework" and once he knew he wasn't the only one that had to do something he was much better. Maybe you could get some paperwork of your own out to do at the same time (paying bills, etc) so that he sees you doing it and not complaining about it.

Good luck on finding something that works for him/you.

Kaylen occasionally has a cursive sheet.

Right now though they dont get grades. They start getting them after the first 6 weeks of school to help them get acclamated (sp) first.

I wonder if after that shell have more. She does have a Bible verse a week but I dont usually work on that with her. Shes a quick memorizer and has it down just from school

I had the same problem with Andrew last year in PS. He had to do things like write a page of Upper and Lower case A's or whatever. It was horrible. They yelling, crying. I worried about the same thing, ADD or ADHD. Then, I decided he was 4 freakn' years old. I had him do 5 letters nicely, and that was it. Some of the girls in his class would turn in 2 pages, front and back, of letters. He's a boy. They truely develop slower than girls right now.

I'm having a homework problem right now. His teacher looked me in the eyes at orientation and said they wouldn't do homework until Dec or Jan, that it would be easy things like nature walks. Guess who lied? I haven't had him do anything yet. He's there from 8-2:40. I don't think he needs to have at least 20 mins of homework on top of that long day.

She got a homework packet on Friday and due back the next Friday and that was every 2 weeks. My only problem was not spreading it out over the week more.

She had to do a scavenger hunt to find things that started with the letters she was working on that week and draw pictures of them(6 letters).

I had to tell her a story and then she told me a story and she had to draw a picture about it.

She had to practice her popcorn words, writing her letter of the week and numbers.

There was more stuff but I can't remember. They are changing how they do homework. After fall break they will be sending 2 leveled books for her to read and want her to do that every night. Not sure what the homework packet will look like then.

Homework so far has been fun for her. As long as its not ditto after ditto then I'm fine with it.

Jasmine, how is homework going now? We were off to a bit of a rough start but now that Lucas is used to it and knows that he sits down and does it right after school and then can play it isn't a pain anymore if I have to correct him.

Well now that he had to be switched back to daycare it is different, they have a packet of homework that goes home on Monday's and is due on Friday. It is more the activity stuff like in the workbooks and he likes it alot more, we did 2 pages so far and are working on the rest. It is just really hard to get everything done with me working full time again, I was so overwhelmed on Monday!

Kaylin has about 6 math questions every day. She has to write her full name once a day. She also has to practice writing the letter of the week in both upper and lowercase 5 times each. She does this every day (or a bunch at once when I forget.) She LOVES to do it!

Colin has a work sheet to do every night plus a book he has to read to us every other night. No homework on Fridays other than us reading to him.. (that's a no brainer. we do that anyway!)

He's been difficult. He'll start off doing super good and then he gets tired of doing it. But if I sit down and do homework with him on the nights I'm not in class he'll do better.
