So frustrated with Dominic's doctor!

So he hasn't pooped for 18 days and I gave him an enema last night and it did not work. How anybody can go 18 days without pooping and not having any serious issues I have no idea. I called his doctor this morning to see if maybe I needed to bring him in because it would cost like $75, his nurse told me she talked to him and he said to give him an oral stimulant like senakot, I gave him one of the Pedia-Lax strips 2 days ago and nothing. So the girl says that his doctor says that I could give him another enema and something oral and if it didn't work then to take him to the emergency room. WTF? He knows I don't have insurance, she said it is because they can do x-rays on him, etc but couldn't he just feel his belly and make sure it wasn't anything serious? I am going to start giving him Miralax today but I hate it because it literally makes him have poop come out all day, I end up changing his underwear like 15 times a day. He starts kindergarten next week and I dont' want him to go to school like this or smelling like poop! The Miralax is like a 3 week ordeal even when I stop giving it to him. This just sucks, I have my SIL on my ass about impaction and how that little girl from Poltergeist died from it, I know that, I am trying to do everything I can and it's not working, what else am I supposed to do? What would you do?

Ugh. That stinks. I have no advice at all.

Maybe the doctor is trying to save you the $75 when he knows you'd just have to go to the ER anyway.

I hope last night's enema kicks in and you don't have to go the miralax route.

I agree. If he thinks its emergent enough to take him I probably would.

I hope he poops soon for you though so you dont have to.

from what you posted, i would go the miralax route.

it you cant afford the doctor, that seems like the pretty clear solution given the enema does not work.

(btw i hate that there are uninsured people in america hat cant get the healthcare they ned - that is just wrong!)

also, if it was me i would totally be searching the internet to get ideas as well.

18 days????!!!!!!  Holy crap!!!  Give him some Miralax, he needs to poop!!!  Give him lots of fluids, water especially, increase his fiber.

When you mash is tummy is it hard, or distended?  What about a suppository?  It may be too late for that, he probably needs Miralax..shoot he may need both.

There's not a hospital around you that you can go to if you don't have insurance, like a state run one?

Thank you all. I gave him a half capful of Miralax and 3 Pedia-Lax chewable laxatives. The doctor called me back and said try another enema and if that does not work take him to the ER. It sucks I don't have insurance, I lost it when I got laid off 17 months ago and my husband works for a small company and we can't afford the insurance there. Hoping this takes care of itself.

His tummy feels normal, it is wierd because usually when he is conspitated it is really big and hard, not this time. There are no hospitals I can take him to, we only have 3 and they are all regular ones. When I took him last July because I thought he had swine flu it cost me $1700 without insurance.

and i know you said you don't have insurance, but if you have to go to the doctor or ER, as long as you pay something every month, they can't do anything to you, even if it's only $5  a month, so don't let that stop you..

Sounds like he needs a KUB to me, which is what his doctor may be thinking

Jasmine, I'm really surprised your state doesn't offer childrens insurance through the state itself (unforuntately, it doesn't surprise me they don't offer adult insurance).

But that isn't what is most important here.  If the Miralax hasn't kicked in by now, I would probably be enroute to the ER.  I also think your doc was probably just trying to save you the $75 when there isn't much they can actually do inthe office other than just send you to the ER anyhow.

I'm sorry :(

Actually the same hospital I would have to take him to screwed me, I had something happening with my heart and I had to have a stress test and even though I had insurance I hadn't met my deductible so it was $700 out of pocket, I was paying them $10 a month and then all the sudden I got one of my payments back with one of those yellow stickers from the post office saying "Account closed". I thought maybe they had moved so I was waiting until the next month to get my next bill and I got a notice saying they had sent it to collection instead. I called them and they said I had not made a payment in 3 months. WTF? So I think they didn't want to take my $10 and so they just sent it to collection.

well, it doesn't matter if they don't want to take it, legally they can't do that.  If you had proven you had paid every month, there's nothing they could do about it

Anyway he did go  a little bit so hopefully the rest will come out! Thanks so much ladies, I don't know what I would do without my virtual support group!

Jasmine I am so sorry you are dealing with these issues with him.  Lauren has issues has well and we deal with them daily.  She goes to the childrens hospital for treatment every 3-6 months to have her chronic constipation evaluated.  We were in your shoes just over a year ago.  The reason he poops non-stop with the miralax is that it is oozing the softer feces out over the impaction and he has no control over it.  Lauren did this too.  You need to give him the miralax every.single.day.  One full cap  is what Lauren is on.  She actually takes the rx form of miralax since she responds better to it.  She did not respond well to the enemas either but suppositories did work a little better when we had really bad times like you are having right now.

For us the pedilax daily was too harsh and just caused the impactions to happen again as soon as she had a few days off like a vicious cycle.  Being diligent with the miralax and making her sit on the toilet for 15 minutes to "try" after every meal has helped us greatly.  We also found out that her impactions we also the cause of her wetting her pants all the time b/c they were internally pressing on her bladder and she had no control of it.

What a mess, literally, it really is and I am so sorry you are dealing with this.  I do understand and hope he gets past this tough patch before school starts next week. :hug
