Bye bye binky

cry

Bryson is going binky free. Starting today. He's in his crib and he's nto crying now but I can tell he is pissed. He's SO mellow and happy and the noises he was making are definitely not.

I was planning on doing it in the next three months but he has been pulling out his hair! He has a huge bald spot no it's awful. So we just went cold turkey. From everything I read and knowing that he really likes hair, especially mine it seems to be part of his own soothing mechanism. I know pulling one's hair out doesn't sound soothing but the other option is that he's anxious or stressed and I can't imagine about what? Things at home are healthy and generally happy so i'm going with the soothing line of thinking. Especially since he's involving the binky.

Soooo i'm hoping with the removal of the binky he will stop pulling his hair, otherwise I don't know what to do! I'm so sad over his huge bald spot, it's become SO noticeable the past week so I know he's been doing it a lot more.

Have any of you had anything like this with your little toddlers?

hmm, we havent had that. I have no advice on the hair pulling. Except that Rs hair is pretty short so it would be hard to grab.... :(

We are trying to limit the bink to bed time. He knows he has to leave them in his bed or in the silverware drawer in the kitchen. He has been pretty good, but admittedly, I pull it out to sooth him some evenings when he is inconsolable.

Rhys likes to tuck the handle up under his nose and will not have it in his mouth without it like that. I think it is so funny.

We got rid of Kiera's on her second bday. We are being much lazier with Rhys, but he hasnt had other signs of stressors. Good luck! its so hard to watch them grow up.

Good Luck! I plan on trying to take Keegan's away completely around 2 1/2. Right now we are just doing the limiting of it through the day as he is (was) a total addict!

As far as the hair pulling. I would guess like you said it is just his way of soothing. I hope with the elimination of binky that helps.

Amber, I just wanted to say that Ryan has always been really into hair. He never really pulled his out, but he ALWAYS has had his hands in his hair, or mine. He, to this day at 7, still loves it. He will lay with me, especially after a tough day, and play with my hair. Its def a soothing thing for him.

I hope it goes well for you! Sending lots of pt your way for a safe transition!

have you tried a blanket with him? Ryan sometimes at that age would pull a blanket up and use that?

Good luck :)

Thanks for the insight Jen. Bryson will hold my hair and rub it on his face smile It's really very sweet. I would rather he loved on my hair then pulled his own out LOL! He was a bit pissy at nap time but went to sleep. Woke up pretty grumpy and was kind of beastly this afternoon. Now he's in bed though and he's not crying or asking for it at all and he's been in there for quite awhile. He told me before bed no more binkies and then baby binky, I had told him binkies were for babies. So I do think he gets it somewhat. I watched him on the video monitor for a bit and didn't see him touching his head at all so i'm hoping we can solve all the issues by saying bye bye to the bink.

Im just wondering how this is going.

Were cutting scotts binky out during the daytime now. He only gets it for nap and bedtime. Hes done amazingly well with it considering hes super whiney so we gave it to him a lot to make him not whine. We switched him over to a thumper stuffed animal.

I hope hes stopped pulling out his hair. that would worry me.

Good Luck.

This is why Raven still sleeps with me.  She falls asleep playing with my hair.  Has done that since day 1.   Not sure how to stop it.

He's all done! He did awesome. I was again so worried, like I was back when we took Hannah's away about how hard it would be on him. It wasn't hard at all. He hasn't asked for it and when he talks about it he says babies binkies. I told him when I took them away that they were for babies and he latched onto that and it's  been so smooth. As far as I can tell he has not touched his hair and i'm so glad for that because I was sure worried. It's really nice to be done with them. Remind me again how old Scott is? I think it helped that Bryson was 2, he seemed to understand what I was telling him and I made a big deal out of telling him how big he was.

Scott is 16 months. We took Ks and Rayms away when they were old enough to ask for them, With the baby coming soon and him being so attatched though we thought we would start now.

With Raym it didnt matter as much because they used different brands of binkys.
