Since Glen won't go with me and I don't think we can afford airfare, I started looking into train rides to places to take the kids.
I'll probably try a New Orleans trip since I looked up "kids attractions" there, and they have some fun-sounding stuff-zoo, aquarium, children's museum, insectarium, and City Park. And the New Orleans route was straight there plus not too terribly expensive.
Have any of you taken a train anywhere? What is it like? Have you taken your kids? Did they enjoy it?
I rode a train from Minnesota to Texas, it took two days, and it wasn't bad at all.
I didn't have a sleeper car, so I had to sleep out with a bunch of different peeps, but it wasn't scary at all. They're really nice, and there's a security person on there who makes rounds all throughout the train ride. In fact, there was an incident with some drunken passengers and they stopped the train and put them off.
When are you thinking of going? You could always come here to Champaign, IL. It also goes to Indianapolis, which has quite a few fun things to do. Dearborn, MI is where Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum is.
Um Joe and I take Amtrak all the time that's how we usually get back and forth (unless I am going up there for a few days and rent a car) We even get frequent travel miles LOL.
I also took the train to Disney with my mom and siblings when I was 19. It was a looooong ride but fun.
They have power outlets for laptops/cell chargers/portable dvd players etc. and free wifi.
And a snack/meal car
The only problem I see with traveling with kids is there is really no place to go. You can walk to the snack car but that's it. You cannot get off at all because it doesn't stop long enough.

I think you can probably amuse the boys for 8 hours. Henry would probably be fascinated listening to the announcements for the stops and I bet would love a map or something to check them off.
