Just when I thought I had Kindergarten all figured out...

...the magnet (art) school called to say they have a spot for Gavin! Ugh. It's a good problem to have but I had accepted that he wasn't going to go there and was really excited for him to go to the other school. Now I actually have to make a choice!

I talked to my mom and my thought is that if we hate it we can always go back to the regular public school no problem but if we don't accept the spot we won't have the opportunity at all. I still need to talk to Doug about it but I hate stuff like this.

So, I talked to the lady. Went ahead and accepted the spot. Today is their last day (admin) and the other school is already out for the summer so they won't request his records to be transferred until August. So, worst case scenario I can change my mind.

The thing is - I'm terrible at making decisions. I had my heart set on this school and was really upset when he didn't get it. Then I registered him at the other school right by our house and felt so good about it. Loved the staff, met the principal and really liked her. Was fine with him not getting into this school. I felt like initially I wasn't making a choice because I didn't have the regular school to compare to, kwim? I am SO indecisive.

It is an arts school - I think it will be PERFECT for Gavin. My only concern is if it will be a good fit for Owen - and I don't want them at two different schools. But like I said, if I don't think it will I can transfer him after Kindergarten and I don't think it will be that big of a deal anyway.

I think it sounds like you made the right decision. What makes the magnet school special(this is a new concept to me)?

Will Owen automatically get into this school if Gavin goes?

It is still part of the public school system but their focus is on arts. Same curriculum but just taught in a different way. He will still have to learn the same things but there is more in terms of art, theatre, drama, etc. (I toured the school and really like it but I'll be honest I don't know exactly what the deal is because I figured we wouldn't get in)

From what I've heard the chance of Owen getting in is very likely because of having a sibling already in. I think most of the time the K slots are filled with siblings.

I think you made the right decision also.  Do you get to pick and apply to whatever school you want?  Ours is based on where we live and we don't have a choice when it comes to public schools.

We don't have any in our school district but in this area it's a public school that is more like a private that you don't have to pay for and they're hard to get in.  Most are middle/high school. You have to apply and have and maintain a certain average.  They have  math and tech, creative and performing arts, college prep middle school, etc.

I went to a magnet art high school and think it is wicked cool that there is something available there for kids so young. (Lucas would be amazing in an arts environment).

I def think you made the right decision. Better to take it and then leave if you have to then totally lose the opportunity.

It sounds really cool. I'd go for it, and if it doesn't go as smooth as you'd like, you can always go to the school close to your house.

Oh! I just remembered. They do a shuttle from the home school to the school so he still can walk to the school right down the street and get to school. We won't do that for Kindergarten but as he gets older that will be helpful. The school is still very close just not within walking distance.

LL - they have a few different schools in the local school districts - art, math, science, language, etc. I can see how you would do arts and still do the same curriculum but for some reason I can't figure out the whole math magnet school.
