is your 05'er taking care of that him/herself after using the potty??? connor has recently started stating he is too old for me to assist in that, but i am not super comfortable that he would do the best job or even worse...tmi...not get anything on his hand. blech.
I think it just depends. I usually let Elizabeth do it herself. I know she goes places without me and I would rather she do it herself even at the risk of skid marks. If she has the runs or some other unusual situation, I will sometimes help.
Jake still yells for me to wipe it and I do just because I don't want the mess in his underwear if he doesn't get it cleaned.
now, that is not a good reason to be wiping his butt and not teaching him to do it. I realize this.
yesterday he said Mom, I can't go to Kindergarten because there won't be anybody there to wipe my butt.
also, I wiped my oldest son's butt for far too long - like long enough that it turned into a joke b/w DH and I. Probably well into 1st grade if I remember right. He still could probably use some assistance in this department (have I mentioned teenagers are GROSS!).
So, I need to turn lose of the butt wiping business and let him do it even if he doesn't do as great of a job as his momma would. Plus, there are times he poos at daycare and wipes his own butt so maybe he's just playing me!!
I don't wipe his butt. I try not to wipe Owen's butt TBH but it's about 50/50 now when he needs help. Sometimes it turns out he didn't wipe well enough but I'm just of the mindset that it is better for him to do it as good as he can than for me to do it perfectly, kwim? I would say 95% of the time it's totally fine. When he gets his underwear dirty he notices the next time he goes to the bathroom and bring them into the laundry and gets clean ones. He doesn't like to be dirty so he typically does a good job.
As far as getting it on his hand - he usually doesn't but he always washes his hands with soap afterwards anyways so I try not to worry about it.
Kaylin is on her own most of the time. I buy her the toilet wipes so that helps her do a better job than with just TP. I will help if she asks or we're in a public bathroom.
I can't remember the last time I wiped Anna. I will if she has issues or is sick and has the big D, but otherwise both girls are on their own.
I haven't seen skidmarks, and they wash their hands, so I figure we are all good. Though I am not *sure* Kate's handwashing skills are tremendous. Anna does pretty well though.
We do have those toddler wipes from BJs-the pre-moistened ones-and they always use them after poop.

opinions?
Ugh! I hate this issue.
I guess my advice is that you have to let it go, let him grow up.
My boys are 8 and 10 and I know they still don't do a good job.
It makes me crazy.
At first when they starting doing it themsleves, I would ask if I could wipe them a couple of times a week just to make sure they were getting a good wipe.
But they need to learn how to do it for themselves for school time.
Anyway, my boys will still come to me a couple of times a year saying that their butts hurt so I know they haven't been wiping good. I give a good wipe and put some desitin on. Yep, it still comes in handy. LOL
But yeah, so hard to give that task over to a 5yo. I know what you mean. If I had my way I'd still be wiping Jack's butt.
We still wipe Andrew. We even still use baby wipes. I feel like they do a better job when dealing with him. Which is kind of strange, since Steve and I use TP. So, not sure what's up with that.
I havebeen tellin Steve that we cant send Andrew to Kindergarten if he doesn't wipe himself. Andrew seems fine to not even try. I tried to show him how to wipe when sitting on the potty, but was afaid I was going to snap his arm trying to get him to reach back there. It's something that we are going to have to start working on every day I guess.
What I still can't figure out, is if Andrew lifts the seat to pee, how does pee still end up on the seat where you sit???
DON'T tell Henry that I told you but I still have to help him most of the time because he has this huge aversion to getting poop on his hands. That aversion is because one time when he was Mark's age or a bit younger, I freaked out when he got poop on his hands. Big mistake.
Neither of my kids will poop at school; they just hold it until they get home.

Andrew is like this too. He doesn't like to get his hands dirty or sticky. Loves purell. The teacher he had last year kind of freaked out about the "swine" H1N1 flu.
He did have to poop once at PS, and complained on having a stomache. The teacher called me, since he doesn't say that usually. I asked him if he had to poop and he said yes, but didn't want to do it at school. They class had less than an hour left, so I just brought him home. But, he has pooped other places, like at Target, so I don't know what was up with that.
i keep a box of kandoo wipes on the floor next to the toilet and she uses those for poops. (i fiind she uses a TON of paper if i dont have the wipes out - she is very thorough lol!)
she is also very good at washing her hands after potty, meals, art play etc.
Nolan does it himself, but he's pretty particular about getting it done good. He's also particular about getting his hands clean so I feel good about it.
He does use the disposable wipes after a poop. He freaks out if he doesn't have any, so when he starts going to school for a whole day he will hopefully be okay without them.
TMI but it isn't an issue right now in our house because Luc doesn't get poop on himself. For some reason when he poops he likes to sit backwards and hold on to the back of the tank and I guess the way he sits with his legs across the toliet spread out his cheeks so much that it keeps his skin poop free.
