Belly Aches - when would you worry?

Jake has complained of his belly hurting for months.

I've cut out OJ thinking that could be contributing to it.  Still hurts.  He eats shredded wheat frequently (so I think he's getting fiber).  I make sure he drinks plenty of water.  The only things he drinks are oj for breakfast, milk at lunch and dinner and water in between.  I think he gets apple juice for snack at daycare but doesn't usually have that at home.  On the weekends he will sometimes get a Sprite if we eat out.

I've wondered if he says it hurts when he is hungry - like mistaking an empty, grumbling tummy for "hurting."

The last two days he has had diarreha (I've never learned out to spell that word!).

When would you take him to the doctor for a belly ache?  Honestly, I'm starting to worry . . .

does it stop him from eating?

does he ever say it after he eats?

how long has he been doing it?

honestly, i'm thinking it's the hunger thing you're describing, but i also know what it's like to worry. if i could answer the first 2 questions with no and no, i'd probably wait it out. that being said, i know if it were my kid doing that it would weird me out too and i'd probably talk to the ped about it.

keep us posted.

If you've eliminated what you felt was the culprit and it still continues, sometimes I think the co-pay is worth the peace of mind.  I'd probably bring him in.  I'm really guessing it is nothing, but if your worry can be relieved with a one hour trip to the docs, I think it is worth it.

sometimes he will take just a few bites and say his belly hurts and not eat any more.   But not long after that he will ask for "a snack."

Yesterday we ate lunch at taco bell and he ate an entire soft taco with meat and cheese and some nacho chips.   He had already complained of a belly ache earlier and was still complaining of it not long after we left there that his belly hurt and I know it should not have been hunger pangs at that point.

it's been going on for a few months but the diarreha just started yesterday and that coupled with his near constant complaints of a belly ache is what is starting to bother me.

I feel like I have been waiting it out while trying to change up his diet a bit here and there hoping the belly ache complaints would stop.  I have to admit, he is not the best eater.  He could live on raw carrots, peanut butter, bologna and cottage cheese, pretzels.  He just isn't really willing to branch out on his eating.  I think we're going to start with some sort of sneaky shakes or something to get some nutrition in on him!

Kris...I would take him to get checked, at least for the peace of mind. Maybe it is an allergy. how were his bowl movements before the diareah (yeah, i can't spell it either). do you think he was constipated and then it got loose?

he is pretty regular. Sometimes it will get a bit hard and I just up his water and try to get more fiber in but he is pretty consistent.

it is so difficult b/c he just doesn't eat well.

yesterday he ate a late breakfast of 1/2 a scrambled egg, 1/2 a piece of toast, 1/2 a pancake in the a.m.  and drank water.    after nap we went to the IL's and he ate 1 bite of a hot dog, lots of chips (:sigh:) and drank some V8 fusion and a few bites of chocolate cake.  That is all he ate all day long.

I asked his teacher this a.m. if he complains of a belly ache during the day and she said yes but she thought it was in between times like when he could be hungry.

He's so funny - he is telling anyone he talks to that he has diarreha.  It's a little embarrassing - we went to Lowe's and I ran in and the kids stayed in the truck with DH and a lady DH has worked for came up to the truck to chat and Jake said "I've been having diarreha."  DH said she slowly backed away from the truck!

he does eat quite a bit of cheese.  That is one of his favs.  Oh and he has cottage cheese probably once a day and I've replaced juice with milk and he has milk on his cereal.  Ugh . . .  he does do lots of dairy.

going to google this subject.  Thanks for the thought.

Kaylin had stomach pains for years along with 4-6 BM's a day. This led us down the allergy road. She's allergic to eggs and wheat. Since we've cut those out of her diet, her pains have subsided.

If you're at all worried, bring him in. I know we feel dumb when it's nothing, but that's why we have our peds!

did she complain about her belly hurting all the time?

how long did the belly aches go on before you took her in?

Jake is pretty regular going once a day or every other day.

When I ask him to show me where it hurts he rubs all over his belly area.  I will touch him in his belly area and say does it hurt here and he says no.

DH has wondered if it's an allergy of some sort.

I'm absolutely not saying don't take him in but charlie complains of a belly ache frequently and it almost always means he has to poop.

it is often coupled with bad behavior that magically goes away once said poop is gone.

I wonder if it is an age thing? it's charlie's standard complaint now. "My belly hurts". Generally food or potty fixes it.

(but again, not saying don't take him in. it is worth the copay for the peace of mind (i think))

It could be an allergy issue. If you are worried then for sure take him in.

Now, that said my middle brother ALWAYS complained of belly aches. My mom took him in and nothing ever ended up being wrong. The peditrician told her at the time it was probably his way of getting attention.

She didn't complain constantly, but several times throughout every day.  When she was 1 she started throwing up occasionally.  By the time she was two, she was throwing up once or twice a week accompanied with daily stomach pain.  That led us to get an Upper GI.  It showed reflux.  She was on those meds until she was three.  Things calmed down for awhile, but when she was 3.5 the stomach pains flared again and I thought it was the reflux again.  Last fall her ped thought it could be Celiac so she tested her and it turned out to be egg and wheat allergies.

So it was months of complaints before I bring her in.  She says her tummy hurts in the middle near her belly button.  She was able to be tested with a just a blood draw.

Could it be gas from not eating enough during the day.... This would happen to Charlie sometimes if he hasn't eaten much during the day - the when he does eat he is full of "wind" and says his tummy hurts.

Also "My tummy hurts" often, in my house means "I don't want anymore dinner, I just want sweets!"

I hope you get to the bottom of it soon though.

When I got to daycare last night to get him he could barely hold himself together anymore.  I was ready to take him to the ER right then!

When I walked into his classroom he was playing with a little girl and each had a blanket and pillow and were laying on the floor pretending to nap.  I think he was just feeling so bad that he hopped on the opportunity to lay down!

As we left his classroom he looked at me with huge tears in his eyes and said it hurts and my privates hurt.   I had him show me where and it was his lower abdomen just above his pubic bone.

He said he had to go to the bathroom and as soon as we got in there he he was on the potty he just blew it out, extremely loud, extremely stinky.  he sat there for probably 20 minutes going and passing gas.  As soon as he was done he felt so much better and his face perked up.

At this point I am going to cut out milk.  We cut it out at dinner last night and he didn't have any tummy ache this a.m.  He had dry cereal and a cup of juice at breakfast.  I asked daycare to not give him any dairy.  I'm going to see how he is tonight when I pick him up.

Anybody know how quickly giving up dairy can relieve these type of symptoms if it is the culprit?

I just called to check on him and his teacher said he has not complained once of a tummy ache and by now he typically has.

I'm calling the doctor when they open up from lunch and chat with the nurse and get her thoughts.

thanks for all of your input!

I know when I have my colonoscopies whatever I eat after takes about 12-24 hours to go through. So I would say after about 24 hours of not giving it to him he should be good.

I hope you have found the source of his pain.

Looks like it might be dairy. Have you heard from the nurse?

The nurse said it couldn't hurt to eliminate dairy for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

He did have a string cheese for snack b/c they didn't have anything else he could eat.   (seriously, no crackers on the premises?!)

I worked late and just got home and asked him and he said it just hurt a tiny bit right now.  He looks great compared to when I saw him last night!

I'm going to stick with the no dairy diet for awhile and see where that takes us.

That's good news. It may be a pain to have no dairy, but if it works, that's great/
