thoughts on a wedding gift

It's been pretty slow around here, so I hope we get some very opinionated responses to liven things up a bit here.

So here's the situation.  Dh is a co-owns a company and it is still considered a small company.  We have occasional dinner parties and get together where all are invited.  We also do a wives night out (since they are all men that work there).

One of the guys there is getting married.  His fiancee has been to these gatherings, so I know her fairly well.  And yes, I like her.  She also seems to be a popular gal.  I have been invited to two different showers for her and a wedding.  All of which is about a 3 hour drive from here.  Oh and they are both chefs, as in big time.

So... I don't want to be a tightwad but this is what I am thinking.  I will go to the showers and wedding.  For the showers I will bring a decent bottle or two of wine (maybe in the 15- 25 price range?) for a present.  Then for a wedding gift we will give them the little wine cooler fridge thing they asked for.  Is that tacky?  I just don't want to end up spend several hundred dollars after all is said and done between hotel rooms, travel expenses and gifts.

Oh and if you have any wine suggestions or know what I should realistically pay for a nice (not fabulous) wine to have on hand, let me know.

Hmmm, I think that with 2 showers, a wedding and all the craziness, she won't get or remember that the wine you are giving her ties in with the wine cooler that you will eventually give her.

I say spend $20-25 per shower on something from her registry and then give her the wine cooler like you planned.

Unless you just really want to give her wine, then I say go for it.

Honestly, I would pick one shower to go to and get her a gift off her registry. I would just pick your price range that you can spend and find something from the registry that fits into your budget. I think it's sort of weird to be invited to two different showers for the same person and I (personally) wouldn't expect a gift from the same person at two different showers. :dunno:

just a quick link to share...

matt filled me in on this website - www.tilsoldout.com

they clearance a different wine everyday. one day it could be a $400 bottle discounted to $200, but another day it could be a $50 bottle discounted for $20.

when you buy 4 bottles, they ship for free.

just a place to keep in mind if you decide to go with wine.

personally, i'd probably go to 1 shower and bring something wine related from their registry but in the $25-40 range - a nice opener or some glasses?

then i'd probably do the wine fridge and the wine for the wedding gift.

I agree - I'd only go to one shower unless it was someone like my bff or my sister.

You can go with the wine (and then say something in the card like "to go with the rest of our present...") or do wine glasses, etc.

I think if I was to go with a wine, I'd go with a pretty high end wine (maybe $25 is high end in the US. Here it would be just over everyday (10-20 would be everyday for us - there's nothing under 10 here).

Ok. let me clarify. a $10 bottle of wine would be "cheap" wine here. A nice drinkable dinner wine would be 15 -20 here.

And I don't think we have boon's farm but we do have great white. a similar college favorite. lol.

Thank you ladies!

April I am going to check out the site.  I think I am going to check my schedule and then decide.  For some reason I feel obligated to do both.  I think some of the confusion is because one of the showers is a surprise shower.  So in the meantime I think I will be doing some bargain shopping and see how my schedule is closer to the rsvp dates.

When you go to the shower and wedding are you suppose to bring a gift to both? I alway wondered what was expected.

I wondered the same.  I never expected a gift for both my shower and my wedding.  Most of our gifts came at my shower.  But then again, my family is about the cheapest you can imagine, so who knows ;)

I may be really unpopular for saying this; but, I would be embarassed to have 2 showers. In this economy, that seems tacky to me. That's just asking for presents, so I wouldn't go to both. But, I am rather cheap. In these times, money is really tight for most people, so I would think that if there are 2 showers, they would have different guest lists. Like, work friends at one or something like that. I wouldn't feel pressured to do both. Like I said though, I count my pennies so others may feel different.
