Cord Blood, who did you save with?

We want to save this baby's cord blood. We were going to do it with Andrew, but the company never got us the kit stuff. It was a horrible experience. The night before I had Andrew we were on the phone with them. I'm still so upset that we don't have it saved.

Anyway...I am trying to plan farther ahead and use a company that someone else has used, so we don't get screwed again. I've gotten info from a lot of campanies, but don't know how to pick. Does anyone have any recomendations? Thanks.

Viacord. I've used them twice, and been happy both times.

When I was pregnant with Alexandra, I went through the financials and leadership of each of the major players in the space -- my thinking was (and still is) that there will ultimately be a lot of consolidation in the industry, and I wanted to make sure I was picking what would be one of the winners. At that time, Viacord was far and away the best choice, with Cord Blood Registry (I think) coming in second. (There were plenty of other options, of course, but those two definitely seemed to lead the industry in having their act together.)

HTH!

Viacord as well.

You just reminded me that I need to do research on how long it lasts.

I want to stop paying the annual fee when the boys' blood isn't good anymore.

I don't have any info from ViaCord yet, but will ask them for some.

I read that CBR just lost their accrediation recently. I have no idea what that means... But saw it on a site comparing all the labs in the US.

Back in the day there was some a-hole lawyer suing all of the cord blood banks, claiming he held some sort of patent and they needed to get accredited through his agency in order to practice legally.

It was clearly a legal form of extortion -- most of the smaller shops probably found it easier/cheaper to pay his bullshit fee than to lawyer up and call BS.

Neither Viacord nor CBR paid up. That actually won them a big fat plus in my book, as it meant they had deep enough pockets to think they could tell him to stuff it.

IDK if this is the same thing or not, but I'd just be sure that any accreditation that's out there actually means something.
