I got paid last week and the check was returned. should I call her and tell her this or wait to get the check back? (the bank said the check was being sent in the mail). I just don't think it is my obligation to call and tell her - i mean, who doesn't know that they don't have money in the bank to cover a check? could it be an "innocent" mistake? i also got my final paycheck on friday - i also cashed this one, so I am assuminig it will be returned as well.
if her check is from a bank nearby, you can take the checks to her bank, the bank they were drawn from, and the teller there should be able to tell you immediately if there are funds - you should pay no additional fees to cash it directly at her bank and you can walk out with the cash.
it could be an innocent mistake - but as texx said, she is probably having serious business/money probs which is why she let you go.
if the bank wont cash it cause she has insufficient funds, you should definitely call her and make arrangements to get your cash.

also, you should look into unemployment...
i agree with all of this, but i'm not sure about the unemployment - i was thinking you had to have worked a certain number of weeks before you qualify.

Thanks Megan! so, I can take the returned check to her bank and they will cash it? yeah...apies is right about unemployment. you have to have made a certain amount in each quarter and i don't qualify by a long shot ;)
It may not be your obligation to tell her but if she doesn't hear from you I bet there is a good chance that she doesn't call you and tell you about it, kwim? I would call her and ask her how she wants to proceed.

If you can get the money from her bank, I would for sure call her. I dont think there was any "mistake" I think she is having cash flow problems. If you dont speak up, she will not be running after you to give you money.

good luck, what a sucky situation.
yeah...it is. I was thinking though that she paid the attorney first (we were paid the same day, but I picked my check up a day later, so maybe the first paycheck depleted the account. :fingerscrossed that she has enough funds in there to cash it. if not, then i will have to call her, i guess. not looking forward to that.

if she now has sufficient funds in the account the check is drawn on they can immediately cash it. i am nearly certain they will cash it there even if it has already been stamped insufficient funds. back in the day when i was a teller a person could try to submit a check to cash 3 times before it had to be reissued - that may have changed though.
you present the check and your id, and the teller will either cash it for you or tell you sorry they cannot due to insufficient funds (the wont give you a balance or give you any personal info about her account tho). and if they can cash it, you will probably need to re-sign in front of them.
P.S. Andrew loves your siggy pic! Curious George, a girl, and a dog...What could be better! LOL
lol victoria! yes..my girl loves CG too:)
I was able to cash the check at her bank yesterday. I did not call her for the $19.00 fee my bank charged. It was not worth the hassle. I am just glad it is done. thanks Megan for your help!!
i'm so glad you got your cash. at least now you know why she fired you and you don't have to wonder if it was something you did wrong.
right, this is what I was thinking. Her firing you should in no way impact your self esteem, etc. This was nothing you did wrong - she overextended herself and unfortunately was on the up and up about it.
Hang in there Liz . . . good things are coming your way
