I think I read somewhere that you were kind of freaked out by your inability to breathe during yoga... OOOOOOOOOMG, so was I when I first started.
So much so that I figured out there's a whole part of yoga that's merely a breathing practice called pranayama, and I've been doing that on and off for the past 6 months. (It's weirdly energizing, so it's been a really good late-afternoon pick-me-up.)
...if you really want to go hard-core yogi, start here. :) (Not that I am, but I'm sort of on my way. Well, I would be hard-core if I were naturally flexible at all... LOL!)
Oh, and PS to Kelly... I also remember literally LOL at your comment about "as someone with anxiety issues, you try not to focus on breathing". That was totally me as well... and still is, sometimes. One of the things I got out of my pranayama practice is something I'd try to describe as an understanding that anxiety is nothing more than a reflex, and if I ride it out long enough, I can get through it (uh, most of the time, LOL).
That said, my first serious pranayama exercise threw me into a full-fledged panic attack, complete with a tight chest. (Should I not have been running 20+ miles a week at that time, IDK if I would've had the courage to believe that my heart was in fact ok, and that I just needed to power through.)
i'm totally going to read up on it more. it's something i gave up on long ago, but i know i'll never reach my full potential unless i get this down. thanks for posting! and i agree that anxiety is like a reflex for sure.
That is what I totally need to do and practice. I have never felt so awesome after any class before as I do with yoga. I really plan to make it big part of my life now.

Do you get the yoga journal?
I don't get it at this time -- I've found that my time for magazines died along about the time I got my very first laptop, LOL. That said, there is one magazine I read religiously -- I've been talking about it here quite a bit, and I see it's on sale through Valentines Day for $14 for an annual subscription --

I get it free with my gym membership, and it is seriously the best comprehensive health magazine I've ever read. Pretty much all of the things we've discussed on this board have been highlighted in there at some point.
While I LOVE what yoga does for me, I don't love yoga itself as much as I'd like to. I'm much more of a cardio-with-pounding-bass type. But what I get from yoga -- physically and mentally -- is totally worth it.
The girls wanted yoga mats of their own, and now I'm trying to find a good yoga DVD for kids. I saw somewhere that Yogi Oki Doki was recommended, but after seeing this, IDK what to think...

i'm also in search of a kids' yoga dvd, i'll let you know. R's yoga teacher might have a recommendation.
Okay, this makes me want to get into yoga. Michelle - I'm totally with you on a workout being cardio and fast pace, etc. But really I am wanting to BE healthy - mental as well. Is there an adult yoga workout DVD that you'd recommend?
On a side note - just exercising and eating better in general has done WONDERS for me. I am off my anxiety/depression meds that I was taking daily and doing okay. I also haven't had to take any kind of pain reliever (tylenol) for headaches!

I have a few yoga DVDs around here collecting dust, but nothing I would recommend (my yoga teacher would recommend anything by Shiva Rae, but I haven't yet watched the one that I own)... TBH, my inability to get them out and actually do them are why it is that I know that I don't LOVE yoga for yoga. I won't practice by myself.
So what I would suggest for you (if you're like me and will probably find yoga kind of boring at first) is possibly trying out some classes. If you don't want to pay for them, a internet search tells me something exciting for you -- it looks like you're getting a Lululemon in your city in the near future. Lululemon is actually a (pricey, but their stuff lasts forever) clothing store, but they do a good job of plugging into and building the yoga community. Why I'm excited is because our store here gives free lessons on Saturday mornings, and I'm guessing there will be all sorts of free fanfare when the location opens up in your city.
But seriously, if at all possible, I would suggest finding a class with an instructor you connect with.
And that's AWESOME news about the meds. It's so exciting, isn't it? I know there's been discussion around here about the amount of health-related conversation, but I know in my case, it's because I'm still in shock about the way that I feel. Like I never would've ever believed a lot of this even possible unless it had happened to ME.

YESSSSSSSS! It's amazing to me that all the "stress" I'm putting on my body with exercising is actually helping with my back and neck problems! It's really amazing for me because I was in a really bad place with a lot of things after I had Owen and it's so nice to be making noticeable progress.

that's great jen, i'm so glad things are turning around for you.

I will check out that magazine. I like the yoga journal for me because it gives me emails daily that have been very good. Plus, I am a newby so there is so much for me to learn.
I think I like it so much because it is really helping me learn how to relax and I can really bring it into my daily life. I have a very bad back from years of sports, running, etc. I am finding this is really fixing my issues. I have one leg that is a bit shorter and if I run it really messes up my body. I am not really suppose to run anymore, but we will see how this goes and how strong I can get my back again. I have not done any DVD's at home yet because I am not experienced enough yet. I really think a class is the way to go to start and then when I become more versed and comfortable that I am doing it correctly then I will start to do some at home.
I see me going to a class though because the atmosphere is much better then at home. I will use the breathing though for at home.
Kelly and I were just talking today about a yoga DVD for the girls. Allie has really taken an interest also and she cannot start at school until next year. I may find a class for her too. I wish I would have started this much younger.
