Yikes! This says drinking 2 sodas a WEEK increases your risk of pancreatic cancer by HUGE numbers.

I think I am going to ban soda from the house. My 2 middle kids don't drink it at all (they have issue with the bubbles) but Jake loves it and Dan is a HUGE soda drinker.

Geesh, that is not good.

My kids (Allie) has never had pop yet. I do not plan to have it in the house at all. Rich does drink it more when out. I do drink it sometimes when I go out. I guess I will cut that out too.

I am going to be eating seaweed and water by the time we are all done reading and sharing info, lol.

yes, we cannot be perfect, but we can just try to be conscience of our choices. Do not give up. Making one change is better then making none.

I really think I am just adopting Michael Pollen's simple food rules. They totally make sense. This Western diet is going to kill me if I keep at it. It is hard though. I will be tempted plenty, but I am totally getting it now.

I can't say that we never have soda, but it's the exception and not the rule now.  We gave it up as a regular drink a few years ago.  I did not even know about these reasons.  We gave it up because it is very bad for bones and if there is any history of osteoporosis in your family it is even worse, which we both have.

Apparently, the process or whatever it is used to make things carbonated attacks bones.  It causes them to become weak and brittle.  Not so great for your teeth either.

remember the chicken bone in coke experiment as a kid? did everyone else do that in science? It eats away at it like no tomorrow.

i havent had a soda in ages - probably since i was a kid.  i actually hate the taste of it, which helps. the kids have never had it. they dont like bubbly anyway. mike never drinks it either.

i never heard of the chicken bone experiment - GROSS.

i remember reading that if you pour a coke down a gas tank of a car (or something) it will corrode the pipes within 10 minutes (or something).

i know, and i cant say that it's the recent health kick either.  i'm soooo lucky that i just never liked it.  mcDs fries are delicious - dont get me wrong, but if that's the ONLY thing that looks appealing, you're less likely to stop in.

i just read the rest of the study.  the bottom tells you how inconclusive it is. i wouldnt panic if you guys are drinking 2 cokes a week. of course it's not great for you (we all have known this forever), but i dont think these results are all that convincing (smoking and red meat are confounds, and i'm not sure how they're defining "at risk" - it's not like 87% developed cancer).

yeah, honestly how can it be good for you. It is corn syrup in a can.

I am living by the 80/20 rule and will be happy with that.

ITTTTTTTA Sara.  You can't change everything.  I refuse to get myself to a place where I worry about every food I eat, every beverage I drink, every product I use, etc. You could kill yourself with worry over it all!!

But soda is a good one to change for so many reasons.  I haven't read the article yet, but anything that increases risk for one of the most deadly forms of cancer is one I would most assuredly toss.  I think you are wise to ban it.  Thankfully, we don't drink much soda anymore (and as such, i don't like it much anymore), but I will make even more of an effort now, especially when we go out.

i think it's easiest to make changes if you just categorize stuff.
that's how i've been doing it.
i KNOW i'm not going to die from my shampoo.
but if there's a healthier one, i'll buy it, and voila - worry gone.  it's really no more overwhelming than that.  and laura, like youre saying, prioritize.  soda is a biggie - so dump it.  chicken hormones are biggies - bigger than bending over backwards in search of an organic eyeliner, kwim?

i figure, ok, beauty products i'm looking for no parabens, no SLS, no phthalates, no petroleum.
i'm looking for nontoxic cleaners.
i'm looking for hormone free/antibiotic free poultry and dairy.
organic produce is great if budget allows.
no HFCS in snacks.  cut back on sugar, cut back on red meat.
that's kind of it, ya know?

then you start fine-tuning (which is where i am now) - and getting more nitty gritty, bc this lifestyle becomes very addicting and you feel SO great about it.  and you make the extra changes you want to make, over time.  it's really not too bad once you condense the info.  for me, this lifestyle ameliorates anxiety rather than produces it, by a mile. :)
