Healthy yogurt?

So, I am looking at what I am eating more than I ever had. It's been eye opening and wonderful and hard but totally worth it. I'm doing it in stages and it seems to be working.

This last week I decided to change up my yogurt to something a bit more healthy. I have given up a lot of sweets and I honestly think my taste buds have become accustomed. So, I replaced my yogurt snack with plain yogurt and I add a bit of agave nectar to sweeten it. Is this a healthy alternative? Seems like it compared to the ingredients but you know it's hard to really tell.

I am surprised at how much I like it. I know it wouldn't have tasted very sweet at all a month or two ago and I love that it is a sweet treat without being too bad. I can totally add fresh fruit or granola to it as well but I'm hoping the plain yogurt/agave combo is a good choice. Especially because Owen loved it too!!!

mmm that sounds really good.  i'm not very knowledgable about agave (but have been talking about it here and there with some friends).
i do berries and granola with yogurt a lot, or even just a little jam.
michelle had mentioned apple butter in yogurt, which was yum.

It sounds fine to me. I've tried to give up sweets, too, but there are always sweets in my house so it's difficult. Also, I get in trouble after my kids go to bed and I can snack on more expensive things without having to share. I got some plain yogurt this week and am reminded how much I do like it.

I do greek yogurt a lot and add a tad of honey.

Plain yogurt with agave sounds good too. Will have to try it. From all I have read the agave is a good alternative for a sweetner. It is low on the glycemic index. It is natural from the plant, but I do not know a tons more. I figure it cannot be that bad compared to regular cane sugar.

I do plain yogurt with fruit a lot. I will toss in a handful of blueberries or strawberry.

Dr. Oz talks about agave and what a great sugar alternative it is all.the.time. Not that everything he says is law, lol, but I would imagine it is a healthy alternative!!!

Where do you get it? I haven't looked for it, tbh, but have been curious to try it myself.

I actually got mine at Costco. It had two bottles of it. I know Whole foods has it also and Trader Joe.

I imagine now it is everywhere. It has become the in thing. I actually like it alot and have now rid myself of all other sweeteners

I will have to seek it out.  I love to drink iced tea, and in and of itself, I don't think the tea is all that bad, but of course, we sweeten it with white sugar, and I'd like to do away with that for myself.  We don't use a lot of sugar, but I really want to cut way back.  I also want to cut back  on what the girls get.  Is it the kind of consistency that you could put it on berries?  My girls always want sugar on their strawberries (especially when they are out of season), and this kind of thing would make me feel a lot better about that!

What does it taste like?

Nice! We get it at most places - Fred Meyer, I think Walmart but not positive on that one. But, we totally just scored at Marshalls - yes the clothing store - they had bottles there for 2.99 and normally we pay at least 4.99!

I'd compare it to honey but a little more smooth. It says it can mix with anything - cold drinks, hot drinks, etc. It is not the consistency of sugar at all but if your girls like yogurt you could try plain yogurt with berries and agave. We've had that before and it is SO good. We do it as a dessert.

that is so random!!
laura, i see it at trader joes very consistently.  not sure on the price. in the $3-4 range i think.

eta: kind of a t/j, but i went to wholefoods today just to do some price comparisons and to check out their beef situation (i never go bc it's inconvenient and you have to pay for parking) - holy crap they're out of their minds with those prices. of course i ended up picking up some fruit and veggies, a few grains...SOMEHOW i spent $82 - seriously W.T.F. - never going back.  what i bought would haev definitely cost around $30 at TJs.

It is a syrup. It is the same consistency of honey. You do not need a ton to add the flavor.

You should try it. It is much better then the sugar in the tea. I do not even notice and I put it in my coffee.

I use it to bake now too. You could put it on the berries, but not a lot.

It is basically the fructose in original form. You use much less of it though then you would sugar.

You still need to watch the amount you use.

I found this really helpful to explaining the whole agave thing.

Not all agave is the same, but this explains it.
