Finished my first yoga class. I loved it and never knew how hard it really is.

Anyone else out there doing yoga?

Do you do it at home also or just in a class setting?

I do a teeny tiny bit of yoga in one of my workouts but not very much at all. I'd love to get a good video. The one I had on instant netflix I just couldn't handle the narration so I need to find a better one. Good for you! I'm so glad you liked it!

What kind of yoga did you do, DYK?

I take an athletic yoga class on Tuesdays (which is an ashtanga class with lots of core work thrown in), and a power vinyasa class on Saturdays. My gym also just started this new Fluid Strength class that I do on Thursdays and Fridays, which is yoga & pilates based but at a pace that makes it a cardio workout. I love, love, LOVE it.

I've done Bikram a few times but I don't like it as much... I like my yoga to be happy, and Bikram feels a little self-loathing to me. :)

It's amazing what a great workout it can be, especially in the flow classes. I'm not really doing much else for strength training other than yoga & pilates right now.

Good question, no, I do not know. It is not Bikram. I had looked into that once and it was not for me to start with.

This totally does core work and I will have to ask what this is considered. We actually have a private class with 6 girls from work. It is going to take a lot for me to learn to clear my head.  This is not at a pace that makes it a cardio workout though.

This one only runs for us for 7 weeks and if we like it she will keep doing it with us. I like the small setting for me right now.

I liked it so much I am going to now join the yoga shelter here and take different classes. This one is just once a week and I now want more.

it's probably vinyasa.
you guys know i love yoga.
i've been practicing for 13 yrs, but am pretty out of practice right now bc of childcare constraints.
in september i plan to get back on my 3 mornings a week schedule.
in fact i might look into weekend classes until then, bc i seriously miss the class setting.
(looking at schedule in different tab now) - i typically hate weekend yoga bc it's crowded, but beggers cant be choosers.
i do a DVD everyday also.  i have an MTV one, and a few patricia waldens, and i love rodney yee (i think that's his last name).
i'm so glad you tried it - amazing isnt it? i've never needed anything else for toning.

I used to do yoga and pilates regularly but it's been a while since I went to the class... I hope to get back into it once my life settles down...

yay, I honestly cannot believe I waited this long. I love it and feel almost addicted already. Is that even possible?

I am so out of shape that I was a tad sore the next day.I love that feeling.

well of course now i want a chemical free yoga mat.

i hear this one is the best mat out there:

http://www.jadeyoga.com/store/product.php?productid=16134&cat=249&page=1

a little pricey though. you can definitely get a $20 mat (any kind is fine) if youre not going to be neurotic about the chemicals.

this eco one looks nice too and a little cheaper:

http://www.barefootyoga.com/Detail.bok?no=847

and there's this one too:

http://lotuspadyogamats.com/shop/eco-yoga-mats/

i have to decide which i'm getting. right now i have a cheapo sticky mat from borders. i'm getting a new one for my bday.

i'm sore today from the yoga class for sure. you definitely get a better workout in a class than with dvds. i am actually so sore that i didnt go to class today. my hamstring is screwed up.

I haven't done yoga in years but when I did it made a huge difference in my body.  I loved it.  Maybe someday I will be able to schedule to do it again.

Thanks, I am going to check them out. I did not even think of the chemicals, lol.

I have a bad wrist and not sure how this yoga will work with that. I imagine it will get better. I have carpal tunnel in one and it gets sore.

I am still sore in areas I never knew one could be sore in,lol. I am so out of shape. I do not think for me a video would work right now. I need to learn more before I venture into a video. I loved this class. It is private and small so it works great for me.

before i had kids i was doing yoga constantly, and developed carpal tunnel. it sucked. i ended up having to do all yoga on my fists (ie, no flat hands on the mat) for about a year. i had to wear wrist braces and the whole bit.
whenever you can, try and do poses on your fists (sounds harder than it is). it should relieve the pressure.

I used to go twice a week, but lately have gotten into more strength and cardio classes. I really need to start fitting the classes in because they do amazing things for my flexibility. The ones I attend are Fitness Yogo, Piyo, or Strength Yoga.

I'm in the market for a good yoga mat myself. I'll have to check out Kelly's suggestions; another brand I'm admiring is Manduka, but those are really pricey. I have a gift certificate to Hugger Mugger, so I'll probably end up getting something there.

I have two basic mats right now, but I think it's time to get something a little sexier, given how often I'm using it (4x/wk).

My only advice is that one of my mats is super thick and plush, which I thought would be a good thing; however, it can prove to be a little troublesome in some of the balance poses, so I would advise against getting anything super thick.

Something else that's been recommended to me that I'm about to buy is yogitoes; I actually have a sore on the bottom of my foot from sliding around on a sticky mat.

So fun...

oh for the love of god.  add to cart. why the hell not.

these look amazing.

i was going to just order a cotton rug (something like this: YogaAccessories (TM) Cotton Yoga Diamond Pattern Rug ) but what you posted looks way more fun.

i ALWAYS wear socks in yoga, and i need a towel at the top of my mat bc my hands get so sweaty.  i totally need a real product.

eta: at my class yesterday, the teacher actually mentioned not to use thicker mats bc of balancing, and she said that they are better for pilates - so mats that are marketed for both yoga and pilates are typically not great for yoga.

When I have my thick mat (which isn't often; it's only when I've forgotten to take my other mat out of my car and someone else has taken it somewhere), I actually step off the mat for balance stuff. Which sucks.

I hope these yogitoes are worth the $$$. Both my favorite instructor and pedicurist recommended them to me, so we'll see. I can't decide what color. WDYT?

What do you use to carry your stuff? I always see these super cute mat bags and I have total bag envy.

the yogitoes thing is cheaper on amazon - i'm looking now....i'd prob go with moss, knowing me.
Yogitoes Skidless Premium Mat-Size Yoga Towel

i have a mat bag i got at borders a while back. it's moss colored (surprise) with a pocket on the outside and the pocket has some embroidery. it's cute, i really like it.

i think i might get this mat, in the interest of not spending a fortune (especially if i get that yogitoes towel thing...):
Natural Fitness Professional Natural Rubber Yoga Mat (24-Inch x 69-Inch x 3/16-Inch)
i just added it to my cart.
it seems thin enough -what do you think?

(actually i think that mat might be thick - this is becoming a pita - lmao).
