Tipping at a hotel
Permalink

I am looking to see what other people do when staying at a hotel/motel/resort on trips.  I have the following questions:

Do you tip the person at the counter?

Do you tip the shuttle bus driver?

Do you tip the housekeeping staff?

If you tip the housekeeping staff do you do it daily or do you do it at the end of your stay (if you are staying multiple days)?

Do you leave a tip at the "free" breakfast?

Do you tip anyone else?

If you do, how much do you tip?

TIA

Do you tip the person at the counter? The person that checks you in? No.

Do you tip the shuttle bus driver? I guess I did last time I was in Vegas.

Do you tip the housekeeping staff? Only if I stay more than a couple of days. $5 plus loose change.

If you tip the housekeeping staff do you do it daily or do you do it at the end of your stay (if you are staying multiple days)? End of the trip.

Do you leave a tip at the "free" breakfast? If I don't bus my own stuff I'll leave a couple of bucks.

Do you tip anyone else?

Do you tip the person at the counter? -- check-in staff, I do not. I do tip the concierge, however, if (s)he makes reservations or gives me recommendations or whatnot

Do you tip the shuttle bus driver? -- yes, if they are helping me with bags, in which case, I give them a buck per bag

Do you tip the housekeeping staff? -- yes, somewhere between $3-5 a day, depending on how messy it was (the $3 comes from the fact that it's what I was reimbursed for when traveling with my old job)

If you tip the housekeeping staff do you do it daily or do you do it at the end of your stay (if you are staying multiple days)? -- Daily, as I'm not sure who cleans what day.

Do you leave a tip at the "free" breakfast? It depends on what they do. If it's a buffet and they just clean the table afterward, I might leave a few dollars. If they bring drinks, even more. The most I would tip would probably be about 10-15% of what I would've expected the meal to cost, and that's if the service was really good.

Do you tip anyone else?

Valet, $2 when they bring my car; doorman, $1 for getting me a cab (more if I have luggage); baggage check people $1/bag when they retrieve my bags from storage; the bellhop a minimum of $1/bag for bringing my bags to and/or from my room on check-in/out (but usually a $5 minimum). Um... if I call down to the front desk to ask for extra towels/pillows/whatever, I'll tip them. I think that's it. Damn, traveling is expensive... LOL!

If you do, how much do you tip?

See above :)

TIA

This is what I do, but I'm not particularly clear on whether or not it's right...

Do you tip the shuttle bus driver? YES, couple of $ (if there are bags involved, + $1 per bag)

Do you tip the housekeeping staff? YES, few dollars per day, it depends on the housekeeper, if they go an extra mile for something, I'll tip more.

If you tip the housekeeping staff do you do it daily or do you do it at the end of your stay (if you are staying multiple days)? daily

Do you leave a tip at the "free" breakfast?  yes, I leave couple $ on the table when I leave

Do you tip anyone else? bellman if he gets me a taxi $3-4, valet parking when they bring my car $3-4, I tip everyone who gets my bags to/from my room ($1 per bag), hmmm... who else....  every service that's provided at the hotel I guess...

If you do, how much do you tip?

TIA

I tip anyone that does a service for me. I do not tip the service desk for check in though.

Housekeeping changes daily, so leave a couple bucks a day.

If someone serves me anything during a free breakfast then I leave a few bucks at least.

Shuttle if only they help with bags.

yeah, you leave the cash and you can leave a note if you like. I usually leave on the pillow and then they know.

I am looking to see what other people do when staying at a hotel/motel/resort on trips.  I have the following questions:

Do you tip the person at the counter? never

Do you tip the shuttle bus driver? never used one

Do you tip the housekeeping staff? only if we made a special request to them.

If you tip the housekeeping staff do you do it daily or do you do it at the end of your stay (if you are staying multiple days)?

Do you leave a tip at the "free" breakfast? never

Do you tip anyone else?  the concierge is the only one

If you do, how much do you tip?  when we drive to the hotel we will give them EUR10 when they first take our car ($15).  to the guy who takes our bags up to the room we give them the equiv of about $2-3 per big bag, when we take our car in and out of the garage we give them EUR5 each time we take it out (but not put it back). and when we leave we leave a bit for the concierge, depending on how much stuff they did for us (dinner reservations, sightseeing assistance etc.  they often get us into trendy restaurants that we know are fully booked, so they would get something for that)

we find that the concierge are the ones who take care of our personal stuff (ie car) or do stuff above and beyond for us. we have quite a few hotels where we frequently stay - they even do stuff like find babysitters for us, take care of our dogs sometimes when we stop during long travels... heck, once i was staying in paris for a fast overnight stay, was arriving late saturday night - i called the concierge earlier in the day before arriving and he went down the street and bought me a few boxes of my favourite chocolates from a special chocolate store as it would not be open when i was there. LOL!  they know us by name and definitely by sight - and we get amazing service by occasionally greasing the wheels, kwim?

we dont do this at all hotels though.

and i feel no need to tip staff that are just doing their daily job.
