Keurig questions - Take 2

Ok, sorry to beat this to death.

I think Rich bought me one as a surprise, shhh. I just had a few questions.

You only use the K-Cup once, right ?

Do you find you have to use more then one for a full coffee mug of coffee? I am worried I will go through so many K-cups now. I love my coffee.

I use it on the largest one (I think 10 oz?) and it fills my big mug. But, I have been known to brew on the second size twice.

What does that mean brew on the second twice? Use the same K-cup twice if you brew on the second size ?

I was reading if you use the bold coffee that you can use it again. I am just confused. I guess when I get it I will play around with it. I just started wondering if it will take two cups to fill my mug and that would stink.

Yes, that's what it means. Mine has three brew sizes. If I want to fill up a travel mug, I have to brew it twice. I use the k-cup over again and it's plenty strong enough for me.

Ok, good to know. I was wondering if it would weaken the coffee running it twice for a travel mug. I think if I use bold it may be good. I will just have to try different ones to see what I like and go from there.

I am sure you are all sick of me by now.

My friend just bought one and I was trying some that came with her machine. It tastes like plastic to me and the coffee seems weak. Ugh, I am so torn now. I like strong coffee and for it to taste like coffee.

Did your machine taste funny at first?

Any tips? She wants to return it and I told her everyone I talked to likes it.

i've never had that with mine, even with the weak samples that came with mine.

how about if you come over here and have a cup of coffee this weekend and tell me what you think?

One day I will  be over that way and I will show up for a cup.

Hmm, maybe she should take it back. You can tell I take my coffee seriously. I am all stressed about getting this and not liking it.  I cannot have bad coffee, ya know, lol.

What coffee was it? I really like the coffee in mine. Green Mountain is my fave. I like the Nantucket Blend, as well as the flavored ones.

She just got like 72 cups free with her machine.

We tried Tullys Extra Bold and I did not like it.

Caribou I think it was a medium roast and did not like

Those were the only two I tasted. It tasted funny to me. It had a plasticy taste to it.

I've been worried about the same thing Melissa.  That's why I asked some of the questions I did in the last thread... I read some bad reviews that pointed to weak coffee, as well as the plastic taste.

From what I can tell from advice I've gotten and research I've done, using a stronger coffee makes all the difference.  April suggested some different kinds in the last thread.  You can also brew on a smaller size and run it through twice.

For the plastic taste, here is a review I found that explains how to clean it to get rid of this.  From follow up reviews, it sounded like it works.  I don't remember where I pulled this from through.  I just saved a copy for after I open mine.

"I will say that both units had a pronounced "plastic-y" taste that was very prominent. I'd highly recommend washing the resevoir, lids, cup holder etc with soap/water thoroughly. Then, run a tank through the unit with a full tank of water + 3-5TBS white vinegar. Afterwards, I flushed the tank 5 or so more times to remove any residual vinegar or strange taste. This cured the problem for me and the plastic taste/smell has never returned. "

I hope this helps! (for my sake too! LOL)

I bought my from Costco and a big reason for buying it from there was that they will take anything back, even months after you bought it.  Just in case. wink

ETA:  one other thing I just read is to shake the K cup before you use it so the water filters through more efficiently.

Thanks, Di.

I am going to pass that info on and do that myself when I get mine. I was all gung ho, but now I am a bit worried. I guess I have to find the coffee I like.

They need a complete sampler set. Off to search to see if I can find such a thing.

Are you getting one ?

Yes!  It's sitting in the box about 50ft away from me and constantly calling my name LOL.

I'm telling Mike that he has to give it to me on Christmas Eve so I have it all cleaned and ready for Christmas morning.  He can put a bow around my first cup if it makes him feel better.

I've been worried all along because the thought of weak watery coffee is my nightmare.  Since I only drink iced coffee, it would be even worse.  (I can't tell you how many times I'll order an iced coffee somewhere and the person will just pour hot coffee over ice.  Because I asked for water with coffee flavoring, right?disbelief).

Worse comes to worse, it goes back to the store.  There are so many more wonderful reviews out there about the Keurig than bad ones so I really think it's worth a try!

not to be an idiot, but what is ice coffee if not coffee over ice? Is it stronger coffee over ice? So, with the Keurig, running the water through on the smallest setting makes for a more concentrated coffee to pour over the ice?

Trust me, you are not being an idiot!  For the longest time, when I saw that it had a 4oz iced coffee setting, I thought it brewed 4oz of cold coffee (and who drinks only 4oz at a time?).

The 4oz is concentrated so when you pour it over ice, it melts the ice and mixes with the water to hopefully bring it down the normal taste of coffee.

When I was talking about people just pouring coffee over ice what I meant was they would just take a normal strength hot cup of coffee and pour it over ice.  This melts the ice and you end up with watered down coffee.

When I make it at home, I make a pot of regular coffee and put it in the fridge for a few hours.  I've made concentrated instant coffee and poured it over ice but it's really just not that good.
