continuing my health kick...

so i overhauled all plastics from the house - even the plastic disposable sippies.  i still have a few plastic open cups but they arent going in the micro or dishwasher.

i did a little research today - even if a plastic says "microwave safe," that just means it wont melt or collapse. it doesnt mean it's not releasing bad stuff into your food.

now i'm onto my personal products. i'm trying to rid my medicine cabinet of pthalate and paraben (which is also called methylparaben and various other prefixes -- but anything with the "paraben" ending).  some studies have linked them to cancer and early pubertal onset (which is associated with cancer).
basically everything scented has it, with the exception of some lines of all-natural products (like burt's bees).
i already use some of burts bees, but i just went online and ordered other stuff (like liquid hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, etc).  there's 20% off with coupon code - plus lots of free gifts depending on what you spend.  i cant eliminate EVERYTHING i use, but i can eliminate most of it.

i ordered some burts shampoo for the kids too, but i'm not sure if it will sting their eyes - i didnt get the baby kind bc my kids are past that stage.  they have curls too, so...they need the real deal.  has anyone used burt's shampoo? is it stingy?  does anyone have a good natural child's shampoo that wont hurt their eyes?

just thought i'd share. i'm feeling really good about de-chemical-ing the house.  i'm totally ready for this.  sorta goes along with my high-fructose corn syrup kick several months back - i'm still maintaining a HFCS free house and i feel so good about it.  :sonya

Kelly...that is great!

My house is so beyond help...we have tons of those glad containers. Why do you handwash? Is that safer?

re the shampoo....I have washed Ivy's hair with mine before and she didn't get it in her eyes (luckily) because I am just assuming that it will burn.

yes it's safer to handwash the plastics.

now i'm looking for a good makeup line that's paraben-free.  stila seems to be, and maybe laura mercier - i'm just getting involved now - i'm going to ask for a little makeup in my stocking this year.  healthier makeup. i barely wear any anyway.  but i dont like thinking about this stuff in my bloodstream!!

We've switched to California baby for Josie - bubble bath, body wash and shampoo. , and cream.

No fragrance, no clear formula chemicals.

Kelly, I am so overwhelmed. I started this last year and was all gung ho and totally just fell off the wagon. I need to get Mia new sippy cups and that. She is currently using plastic. I just worry because she is at a age where she throws it down on the floor, etc. I know it is worth our health, but it is so hard to make the changes.

I have Allie off all plastic. It seems much easier as they get a bit older. I am going to try and start again.

The parabens are crazy in all makeup and that. I wonder how you find out what makeup does not contain it?

i'm doing some research now and will keep you posted.
it's VERY hard to tell.
i think i might have to actually call some manufacturers tomorrow. i'm reading that bobbi brown has gone paraben free, but i'm not positive.
i think stila has some stuff that's paraben free, but isnt clear if it's their whole line. will DEFINITELY keep you posted.
i know, so hard to make a change with kids really small.  cara's at an age now where it's easier. she's not throwing stuff around. i totally understand what youre saying.

not everyone loved it. I am not sure what type of skin you have. You can go in and have them try it on you. I really like it. It feels like I am hardly wearing make-up. I am not a big fan of liquid foundation and all that.

I'm super intrigued.  Not ready to make the plunge yet, honestly, Travis would freak if I tried to change up anything right now in our home.  I think I could incorporate some changes next semester and really dig in next summer.  We plan to spend 4-5 weeks at the inlaws farm this summer and I think it will be a great time to detox our systems :)

Here is the website where you can enter different brands and see if they contain dangerous chemicals or not:

That's great, Kelly, that you're doing all of this!

I also get pretty overwhelmed by it all.

Anyway, I just wanted to share! :)

just to clarify, no studies are completely conclusive about the links to cancers.  but i feel way better about trying to reduce chemicals in the house.

i just ordered CAbaby shampoo for the kids.
i'm going to worry about the makeup another day. i need to see it in person.  i might go to some counters and do some of my own little research.
in the meantime, i've been using burts bees tinted lip balm which is just enough color for me (and costs like $5).  i'm going to ask mike for new makeup for christmas.

I remember seeing an Oprah show when they went into homes and tested the amount of chemicals, parabens, etc. It was crazy the amount the average person has in their home and what they consume.

I think lipstick was a huge one. I love burts bees too so that will not be a problem. I have switched to soy candles in the house and making sure there was no lead in the wick. I just need to look into our hair products, lotions and that.

I am going to go this weekend and get those stainless steel sippy cups.

see, now if i could replace all of my tupperware, sippies, plastic plates, plastic cups, shampoo, and makeup to non-chemical versions free/cheap with coupons, then i might consider the undertaking;)
