Deceptively Delicious

All this saving money on grocery talk and meal planning talk and Cole growing an inch talk has me really thinking about how crappy Jack eats while my others kids are growing and thriving and trying new healthy things. Jack is a shrimp and Ryan is taller than him now. I'm feeling so guilty but can't force food down his throat.

Anyway, whilst getting a martini glass down from the rarely used cabinet yesterday I stumbled upon my dusty cookbooks which included my Jessica Seinfeld Deceptively Delicious cookbook.

It has to be a sign, all of it coming together like that.

Soooo, did anyone ever give that whole DD thing a shot? How did it work out for you? Too time consuming or easy?

I bought all the stuff that I need to do it, I just never did it. :bag

So I'm going to give it a real shot this time.

i use her book a LOT.
i dont bother pureeing though, it's unrealistic.
i just buy earth's best babyfood and do what i can with it.
or i buy canned beets or wahtever and mash them up.

the turkey meatloaf is probably my favorite recipe in there, and we do a LOT of the breakfasts (the sweet potato french toast and the pink pancakes are big hits) - the applesauce muffins are DELISH and i love the choc chip cookies with chick peas.
i havent tried the PB dips bc C is too young for PB, but they look really good.

and the turkey meatloaf recipe supposedly makes a nice turkey meatball, but i havent tried that yet.

I have the cookbook too and I love it!  Same here, breakfast ones are a hit and a few things in there including the turkey meatloaf too!!!  Really, most of the foods turn out good regardless of what you do w the food (puree or not).  I did the same thing, I didn't bother pureeing I just mash up the veggies or whatever it is they asked for so it wouldnt be SO obvious in the food. Like if I cut up carrot and put it in the dish, Ava with her eyes would spot it out of no where.... so mashing it does the trick so she wouldnt see any of it :)  Van on the other hand will try anything most of the time.  It's Ava that I have to work with to TRY food, shes not good about trying different food *sigh*

I may have to pick this one up. Lance is SO skinny and eats like two foods on a regular basis. I feel guilty too, but it's like you said, Kristi, you can't force food down their throats.

Maybe this is the answer? Good luck with Jack!

I've definately fallen out of practice with it.

But, what I did try, was huge hits. The first thing I think of is the chickpea cookies - people loved those, Hannah and Joe included.

Love the tip of using good baby food. I may have to steal that idea, and give it another swing. God knows I need to be cooking more often, and pushing some hidden veggies wouldn't be a bad idea.

Brilliant on the babyfood.  Will pull that book right back down!

Kristi - this sounds just like my boys. Owen will be bigger than Gavin so soon! And Gavin is the worst eater, and Owen isn't. I am going to try and get on board with the meal planning, saving money, etc. and try to incorporate this book again!

I just picked the book up a few weeks ago for $3.00 at our grocery store. I haven't made anything yet out of it though.
