My grandfather was career Army (some may remember his military burial pics from Arlington I posted last year...)
Well, he was an artillery guy, in Europe in WWII. After the war ended, he went to Nuremburg for the war crime trials. At that point, wives were permitted to come be with their husbands. Poppy was so proud - apparently he was the first to submit the paperwork to get a wife over- and shortly thereafter my grandma was on a loooong boat across the atlantic.
9 months after she arrived, my mom was born :)
The german men in the village in Nuremburg where they lived were so happy and to show their appreciation, they hand made a wooden cradle for my mom's birth - with carved hearts and hand painted scrollwork and flowers, very typical of the craftsmanship there during the time.
The cradle was passed down to me, and I just had it cleaned and the joints tightened by an antiques craftsman here in Lux. So interesting - this is is second voyage across the atlantic - coming nearby to where it was originally made!
Baby #4 will be sleeping in this cradle in our bedroom!
That is adorable! What an awesome story. You'll have to save it for when your kids have children (assuming they will take as good care of it as you do... : )
