Still having accidents

i don't know what to do.  she has more accidents than she has success on the potty.  she doesn't like to try if i tell her so she waits until the last second and then runs to the bathroom but doesn't make it.  this happens all the time.  she just holds it for hours and hours.  she doesn't go at school, while we are out and even refuses to sit on the potty in the morning.  (she wears a pull up at night and it is always wet in the morning)

should i have her checked by the doctor or is it something that i shouldn't worry about?

Liz I am sorry you are having to deal with this.  Honestly, I think it sounds like a control issue.  I know that for Elizabeth, she behaved in a similar way and it was a nightmare.  I don't know what will make things click for her.  For Elizabeth we finally just had to either put her in time out or not allow her to go do whatever it was she wanted to do.  I tried to make it cause and effect (go potty or else we can't do xyz because if you have an accident it will ruin the xyz).  I realize that many will not agree with this.

Also it wouldn't hurt to take her to the doctor.  You might want to ask ahead of time what they will do.  I am guessing it will involve urine collection one way or another, so you might want to be prepared.

Ivy is a smart girl and raising a smart kid is not easy.  But I honestly have to say that I found her quite charming, adorable, and fun. heart.gif

Thanks Libby!

I just wonder if it is something neurological (sp?) maybe she is not getting the signal until it is too late or something.

I have a genetic defect with narrowing of one of my tubes...and when i was little, i had accidents all the time as well.  that is what worries me is that we are getting closer to all day school and i dont' want her to have accidents and have the kids tease her, kwim?

I would first take her to the Dr. to rule out anything. Maybe they can give you suggestions.

She is not in a pull up at all during the day, right?

What does she do when she does go pee in her pants?

What about her bowel movements? Does she not do that in the toilet either?

It could be just a matter of not wanting to stop what she is doing.  It could be control. It could be so many things.

How has she been behavior wise? No change?

In that case I would make an appointment asap.  It's better to make sure she is fine.  I don't know what your doctor is like, but I would also ask about the influence of her diet and how maybe things like iron or other supplements might help.

Lucas does AWESOME at school with PTing. He has only had two accidents and he goes all day 5 days a week. Both of them were while he was asleep at naptime. Anyway, when he is at home it is a while different story. He still has accidents every day. He waits until the last minute to go.  If we suggest he goes potty he throws a fit. He still wears a pull up at night as well and is always wet.
