Brother to basic...holiday gift?

I'm not sure if I've talked about this here??  My older brother has enlisted in the Army Reserves and is heading out to basic on December 29th.  Long story short, he has been aimless since his wife left him ten years ago (only 30 days after the HUGE princess wedding...she had been cheating straight through.  Heartless).  The army is a good thing for him, despite my mothers constant prayer that he develops a bum leg or something in the next 60 days.  He is already an EMT with fire and other emergency training so he is entering at a higher level (??? sorry, I don't know the lingo- he is our only military person on any side of our families).  He will be gone for 5 months.  Frankly, if he decides to unload his house, I don't think he will come back at all- which I also think would be a good thing for him.

Since NO ONE in my family has the slightest idea...what should I get him for Christmas?  I know he can't take much.  Is there anything helpful?  I have no idea what he will and will not have access to since I don't know anyone personally that has gone through basic.

We don't normally do Christmas between adults, but we are all going to do Christmas for him since he will be going away for so long (well, not all gifts since that is impractical, but several family members are throwing him a going away party, etc)

Thoughts?

honestly the fewer things he takes the better.
They provide you with all you need.

I would get him maybe a book of stamps or such to write home with. A calling card to cal home for when he can.

Theres not a lot of downtime. A photo would be nice.

When I went they take all your belongings and lock them up and you dont get them till your done. All you have is your bdus, a bible if you wish some photos.

WHen he gets to tech school or ait or whatever they call it for him he will have more freedom of what he can and cannot have. At that point maybe you could see if he misses anything from home that hed like.
