Gluten & Dairy free diets?

So, Don's exSIL's 15yo daughter was taken to the ER a couple weeks ago because she had stroke-like symptoms--slurred speech, loss of balance, numbness on one side, then soon after she got to the ER she had excruciating head pain. After being transferred to a Peds hospital and meeting with a pedi neurologist then 2 days of testing--CT, MRI, EEG (among other tests)--she was diagnosed with "sporadic hemiplegic migraine".

DOn's exSIL was telling me about it and we were talking about how my own migraines have changed the last few episodes...not the numbness so much as muscle weakness so I can can barely walk and tingling on the entire of side of the body affected by the migraine (mine is right sided). ANyway, she was saying that the dr told her to put her daughter on a casein and gluten free diet because they are common triggers for migraines. She suggested I also try it.

I have no idea where to even start...I mean I know immediately no dairy (ihni when the last time i drank milk was and the thought now disgusts me) so getting rid of milk, ice cream...the OBVIOUS stuff, and assumingly no bready stuff.

WHo follows this kind of diet? What advice would you have? What are the tricky kinds of foods?

TIA...any help would be appreciated.

I just saw a cookbook at Costco that looked good.

I looked into it for Jack and there is a ton about it on the internet.

Hi-Health carries gluten free stuff.

Oh and I think Jenny McCarthy wrote a book all about it.

Do you have a Trader Joe near you? They sell a lot of gluten free products. It really limits what you can eat and takes a lot of work. We have two kids with celiac disease at the school and they pretty much cannot eat anything. There is a list of products that are gluten free and you may be able to google.

It is worth trying if in fact is causing issues with you.

I'm not gluten-free, but I am dairy-free, and it's harder than it sounds because whey and casein are in everything!  I can't eat most packaged foods, so it requires a lot of cooking.  Gluten-free on top of that would be really hard, but there are a ton of internet resources about both kinds of diets, so you just have to focus on what you CAN eat rather than what you CAN'T, and you'll get used to it.

GL, and LUK how it goes!!!

Definitely start small and don't cut it all out at once. I think casein free is a lot harder than gluten free. I would cut dairy and see how that helps and then cut something else. That way you could find what triggers *you* instead of just cutting everything out at once.

This is very interesting to me as we just got Kaylin's blood work back and she's allergic to eggs and wheat. They were testing for Celiac, which it isn't, but it's pretty darn close, and ugh! Trying to figure it all out certainly has a learning curve.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll start with the dairy---bc i've done that to some extent in the pas and noticed a huge difference in bloating. I got back into a cheese habit so that will have to go, but I dont drink milk or eat yogurt. I switched to sorbet to replace ice cream before.

The thought of giving up my pasta and bready things (I LOVE to bake) makes me break into a cold sweat and the shakes LOL, although undoubtedly I might find my waist again.

We'll see how it goes smile

actually, if you love to bake that will come in handy.  you can find gluten free recipes for pretty much anything you want to bake.  you will have to make a trip to a health food store to get different kinds of flour.  i have made lasagna with gluten-free noodles and couldn't tell the difference.  i have spaghetti noodles to try, but haven't tried them yet.

Do you eat cereal?  What do you put on it?  I'm working on eliminating dairy but I love cereal and can't find a good substitute for cows milk.  Soy is out and I don't like almond milk on cereal.

I use rice milk - NOT the vanilla kind.  I haven't tried almond milk yet.

Almond milk is delicious.

I'm lactose intolerant and though I'm terrible at avoiding dairy (it almost never happens) when I'm in the mind to be good I use almond milk or soy milk- mostly soy but if I'm at our Earth Fare (local health foods/organic market) and they have it 2/$4 then I get some b/c its super tasty to me.

I don't miss milk, as I was never a milk drinker anyway, and I don't miss cheese all that much.  I DO miss caramel lattes from McDonald's though.  I was making my own coffee at home for a while, but Evie is sensitive to that too.  She's such a little diva already!

Thanks.  Didn't even think about rice milk.  Almond milk was OK to drink but I'm not a milk drinker anymore.
