I took Raven to her pedi for a cough. She was going on a couple of weeks with her having days with no coughing. Raven said she had a spider in her throat. Her pedi said allergies and to try claritin for 2 weeks. It will be a week tomorrow and she is still coughing. At her doctors visit I didn't even think to tell her we got a dog. If it was the dog wouldn't she have a constant problem with it? Should we give claritin more time or switch to something else now? I feel bad about it but I don't plan on getting rid of the dog even if she is allergic to her.
Owen is allergic to pet dander. He takes Zyrtec daily.
We have no pets but my mom has a cat and his aunt has a dog and cat. After spending anytime at their houses he will start rubbing at his eyes and coughing more. Usually scratching more as well as he has always had eczema issues related with his allergies.
Sadly, I am sure having the dog in your house will prevent her from getting over the allergy issues. :(
Sara, do you know how look it took to see improvement in his allergies when he started his medicine?
We started seeing improvement when we started with his regimen the allergist advised us to do. Owen however has many allergies besides just pet dander.
He has matress and pillow covers, a cool mist humidifier in his room, I run the vacuum and dust weekly in there. He takes a bath each night washing away any impurities (allergens) he comes into contact with through the day. Those are just a few things.
He is also on a nasal spray because his nasal passages are always real red and swollen and he was put on it at one of our follow up appointments.
But it is not fool proof. With the weather changing over to fall Owen's allergies and eczema has started acting up again which I am sure is just something outdoor triggering it. He has only been tested for indoor/common household allergies not the outdoor stuff yet. He will get the full panel when he is between 6-8 yr old.
We have no pets so obviously that is not an issue. Pets however seem to be one of his biggest triggers and one of his biggest signs besides coughing and clogged/runny nose is his eyes get red and swollen and he starts rubbing at them saying they hurt.
Thanks for the reply. Her eczema is under real good control now and we have never found a trigger for it. Her problem now is the post nasal drip that makes her cough and that has only happened in the last couple of weeks. We are hoping to avoid testing for now and try a few medicines to see what works.
I hope you find something that works. I do know allergies do not start showing up in kids until age 3-4 with them reaching their peak around 6-8. So that might be why she is just now starting to show signs.
