Tell me about cloth diapering

I NEVER thought I'd even be considering it, but I am.

How do/did you get started?  Would you recommend any brands?  Any good websites?

TIA!

I love to talk about this!

There are so many good brands and really, it is so easy.

She's at a great age to start now that she's a bit bigger and probably isn't going through 10 diapers a day.

Let's see, I love a couple of different brands.

I really liked FuzziBunz and BumGenius. They are the kind you stuff.

I like both of them because they dry quickly and you can stuff them depending on need (more for night/less for day).

The FuzziBunz are sized. I'd get Mediums I think for Evelyn. Josie could probably still wear a M right now and she was in them from ~2 months. She's pretty tiny now though.

The BumGenius are adjustable. They have different snaps on the front to make them work from infant to toddler. That said, if you are not planning on having any more babies, i'm not sure how useful this would be for you. She's already passed the age when you'd have to adjust a lot.

When I can remember the name of my favorite website (I'm dangerously low on coffee this morning), I'll post it. I loved loved loved their stuffers.

I would recommend that you get a few individual diapers (of different brands) and see if they work for Evelyn. Not all cuts are good for all babies.

Cloth diapering was seriously SO much easier than I expected. I did an extra load of laundry every couple of days.

Hmmmmm. I do have some FuzziBunz but I think I'd have to have them drycleaned to send to you (stupid US Border about sending anything fabric into US - must be drycleaned (with tag) or new with tags).

I have way more to say on this topic. lol.

I also liked All in ones. They take a bit longer to dry but there is no stuffing necessary. If she isn't a terribly huge peer, AIO may work for you better (and I bet John will like them better).

If you have questions, ask away. I love talking about this. I'm going to be much more diligent with cloth diapering if we have another. I slacked a bit with Jo even though I had much prettier diapers.

Yay, TY!

She only poops about once every 3 days since I gave up dairy, which is a big selling point - I don't think I'd be considering it if she pooped all the time, LOL.

So the AIOs - the inserts are already in them?  So you have to have enough for all diaper changes until you're ready to do laundry?

Pockets (FB or BG) or all in ones, you only use once.

There are things like G-Diapers where you have a throw away/flush away insert and you reuse the shell until it is dirty.

At her age, depending on how often you want to do laundry, you'd want 12 - 24 diapers I'd say. I had 10 with Charlie and I had to do laundry almost every day.

I also did disposables at night with both of them simply because I was lazy and worried they wake up in cloth. It didn't really matter, they woke up with disposables. lmao.

I also used these great 'paper' liners for the cloth diapers (look like dryer sheets) and they really helped with the leaks (but neither kid was a big wetter - though josie was a poop up the back kind of gal). And I liked a piece of fleece against their skin which made for easy clean ups.

I have a lot lot lot to say about this but I'll let you ask questions.

Cloth diapering has not been a big deal at all. Like Sonya said an extra load every couple days.

I have only cloth diapered with keegan and started when he was about 6 weeks.

I started with Ewies all in ones. Then I went with Fuzzi Bunz and Bumgenius pocket diapers.

Pocket diapers were not for me. I hated the extra step of stuffing and finding the right absorbancy.

My stash now is all bumgenius organic all in ones. I have snap and velcro versions. LOVE them!!!

We also had Sposoeasy's all in ones. They were great as well but they are sized and Keegan out grew the rise and I just ended up getting some more of the bg organic aio's to take their place.

diaperswappers.com is a great site! they even have a for sale or trade that you can buy or sell diapers. That is is what I have did with alot of mine going through all I did to find what diaper worked best for us.

We also use cloth wipes because it is just easy to wash it all together. I of course keep regular wipes on hand as well.

It can seem overwhelming at first but once you get past that it really is not bad at all.

I will say we use disposables at night. Despite many attempts I could never get a cloth diaper that did not consistantly leak for us over night.

I have I "think" 19 diapers total in my stash for Keegan.  I usually do laundry every other day.  Sometimes every 2nd day. I usually start a load when I have 4-5 diapers left out.

Also the SUN is a fabulous thing for cloth diapers.  And will take away most of your stains you get from poop.

great info already.....

kellycloset has a sell on the bumgenius buy 6 get 1 free for like $105 and shipping would be free over $100. Also if you look around you may be able to find a coupon code for $5 off or 5%. You should also consider buying a special detergent just for the diapers.... ours laster forever just now having to restock.

and as for wipes I just use the $1 packs(4) of wash cloths you get from walmart.

Thanks ladies! I'm going to a store today that sells cloth dipes; they are having a "garage sale" for people to sell their used dipes, so I'm going to check it out and maybe try a couple of different ones before committing to anything.

Thanks again, you have been very helpful! :)
