I know Tx has signed A up for races and anyone else with experience please chime in.

Ethan loves running and he's actually good at it. We've been going for walks in the evenings and instead of sitting in his stroller or even walking with us, he likes to run ahead (on the sidewalk or grass) and I give him points to stop (like the stop sign or end of sidewalk) and he'll wait while we catch up and then start over.

I was going to look into some sort of kid racing but I have no idea what to look for or even where to start.

And if I sign him up, does he need to train? how are hardcore are the kid races?

Thanks in advance!

The ones that we do (we have another coming up this weekend, I think) are usually either a half mile, a 1K, or a mile.

She doesn't train, although she does like to run a little periodically. I think Ethan would be more than fine if signed up for one of these.

I found that the race can be a little overwhelming at first for them -- what I found was useful was to break it into segments... e.g., can you beat me to the fire hydrant? now how about the stop sign? etc.

Personally, I probably wouldn't do much more than that until they hit double digits. I know that even competitive teen runners are told not to do full marathons until college (or even after).

HTH!

PS: I found this for you, and it looks like there's a pretty thriving running community up there, which is awesome! You could potentially do a 5K walk, too, but I'd bring a stroller for that one... and let him decide when to walk/ride.

Oh, and around here anyway, they're not hard core. The kids just run/walk/whatever, and they usually all get a patch or ribbon or something.

Really, I think you'll be great and that you'll enjoy it!

thanks Michelle!

Do you run with her? Or is it just the kids?

I told Ethan that maybe he can sign up for a race and he's excited. He asked if he can run with the three-year-olds because he'll have a better shot at winning. lmao.

I run with her -- most of the kids races around here don't start getting serious until ages 6-7. (And by serious, I mean where it's just the kids and they're actually timed.) They're family fun runs... no official time, everyone's a winner, parents and kids, some in strollers, some not.

I didn't enter Victoria in the last one, thinking she was too small, and after Alexandra and I left, she decided she wanted to run, too -- so she and Damon took off after us. And she came in DFL, but I'll be damned if she didn't finish it. They gave her a ribbon anyway, even though we didn't pay... LOL!

There are some pics and videos up on my facebook from a few races -- you might be able to get an idea of what to expect. Of course, they may do things a little differently there.
