how many books do you read at bedtime?

We are averaging 6 right now....and I know that is too many, b/c she just prolongs the bedtime routine and it is always "one more please" and of course, it is hard to say no to books, kwim?

What are you doing? any advice to shorten the load?

omg, you are nice!

we went through a phase when emily wanted me to read a gajillion books, but i finally just started the 2 book rule. we modified it a bit when emily and jake started going to bed together so that they both got to choose 1.

we do either 1 or 2. they each get to pick one book. many nights jake does not feel like laying still so he can play on the floor quietly while i read to emily. on those nights, we only do 1 story.

You could set a timer for how long you want to read and no matter what she picks it is over when the timer goes off.  For us it depends on the book and how long it is.  It usually ends up being 2 books.

ITA!!!  6 would be a definite no go here too.

Like April, we do 2.  They each choose one.  If itis past bedtime and they pick a long book, we tell them that is too long for a late night, pick a shorter book.

I like the timer idea.  And you could shorten the time you set as time goes on.

We were doing 1 book of her choice, in addition to her Bible story... so, 2.

Atm, we aren't doing any. blush.gif She's been so easy to lay down since she got her DS, that I don't poke a sleeping bear. We just read more throughout the day to cover it, and will start reading her Bible in the morning.

We used to read about 3 but currently Christopher is into a phase where he wants us to make up a story about him and his friend/s.  He'll tell us a scenario and friends that he wants us to include in the story and then DH or I tell the stories.  We do about 2-3 stories before bedtime. wink

They each get one.  Anna always chooses a look and find book but like Christopher Lauren is really into having us make up a story.  Lauren has been pushing her luck lately so it's either 1 short short and 2 songs or 1 long story and no songs. (we sing before bed too).

We usually do 1 (2 if it is a really short story).

I try to read with her more throughout the day.  I just don't have the patience at bedtime to read more than 1 or 2 :bag.

If it's later than normal, which is the case most of the summer, then B & K have to agree on 1 story.  If we're on time, then they each get to choose one.  They are into Bearenstain Bears so they are fairly long stories.

Same here, unless one of the books they choose is the children's bible they have, then we do 1

I don't have time to read 6 books, lol

we read one book, say prayers & lights out. i don't make exceptions because my kids will push and push if i change even  one night.

of course, we read on and off throughout the day so i don't worry about not doing much at bedtime.

6? Wow that is a lot. We read 1 long one or three short ones and a bible story. Usually takes about 10 minutes. If that helps

This is very similar to what we do. The kids each get to pick one story, but whoever goes to bed second will hear both of them.

Some nights one or both of them will wrangle two out of me, but usually it's one each. It's hard to spend a ton of time on bedtime when I have both of them, plus Evie who is usually almost ready for her last bottle at that point too.

 This is us exactly

well, plus one song.

we were doing 3 for josie (board books) and 3 for Charlie but now we are doing 3 together.

it doesn't matter how routine it is, he still begs for more but 3 is enough. Mike is nicer than me. I won't let him have 3 long ones. I try to mix 1 long with 2 short.

2 here on average. If she is bad then it is no books. She loves her books so the threat works still :)

Liz, just tell her you get two books at night and let her pick. If she throws a fit then tell her no books tomorrow and stick to it. She will fall in line eventually, but you have to lay the law down.

John puts Mason to bed the majority of the time biggrin, and they do shadows on the wall first, and then read 1 or 2 books.

I usually just read him one when I put him to bed.  We read a few books during the day too, and sometimes he insists on a book before naps.

We usually do 1 or 2. By the time they go to bed I am super tired. I try to get Madi to pic out shorter books. Nathan sits in his crib (in the same room) and listens or "reads" to himself.
